Kristopher Ryan Kerstiens

Kerstiens, Kristopher Ryan 25 7/25/1984 10/31/2009 Kris, you were loved by many! Kristopher Ryan Kerstiens, 25, died early Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, of complications from the 2009 H1N1 Flu
. Kris is survived by his parents, Kevin Floyd Kerstiens and Joyce Wilkins Kerstiens; sister, Kelsey; grandfather, Paul Wilkins; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his beloved golden retriever, Sammy. Kris was born July 25, 1984, in Portland at Emanuel Hospital. He weighed three pounds, 10 ounces at birth, but quickly made up for his tiny start. Kris graduated from Beaverton High School in 2003 where he played varsity football for four years and was named all-conference. Kris went on to Oregon State University graduating with honors in history in 2008. During his tenure at OSU, he attended a semester abroad at University of Santiago in Chile. Kris used his summers to great advantage. He spent one summer studying at the film school at University of Southern California. He spent another exploring the southern African countries and Europe. He spent still another exploring South America, including a trip down the Amazon. He visited 37 countries in all. He was always looking for adventure - taking classes in scuba diving, mountaineering and surfing. He loved his friends and the times they spent rafting, camping, playing video games, watching movies and working out. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in the Graduate School of Education and Counseling at Lewis & Clark College. He enjoyed interacting with his fellow grad students and found working with high school students rewarding. Always close with his family members, Kris went to a Seahawks game on Oct. 18, 2009, with one of his cousins. On his way back from Seattle, he felt ill. He saw the doctor the following day. He continued to get sicker during the week, ultimately ending up in the hospital where he developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Kris passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a weeklong struggle to survive. There will be a memorial service for Kris at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel at Lewis & Clark College. It will be followed by a celebration of Kris's life. Remembrances in Kris's name may be made to Oxfam America, 226 Causeway St., Boston, MA 02114 (www.Oxfam.org); or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Research, Kathryn Reis, Admin. Mgr., Johns Hopkins University, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, 1830 F Monument St., Fifth Floor, Baltimore, MD 21287; or the charity of your choice.
