Clatsop Health monitoring pertussis outbreak; vaccinations urged

ASTORIA - As a result of several recent cases of pertussis locally, the Clatsop County Public Health Department is encouraging everyone in the county ages 2 months and above to be vaccinated against the illness, also known as whooping cough.

The department is reporting a total of six positive reports of pertussis ? a 2-year-old child, four school-age children and a 31-year-old adult. On Tuesday the health department sent out a memo to parents of schoolchildren describing the disease?s symptoms and means of spreading, and tips for prevention and treatment...

Vaccinations are urged for everyone over 2 years old

More local reports of pertussis have been received by the Clatsop County Public Health Department, prompting the office to again encourage everyone in the county ages 2 months and above to be vaccinated against the illness, also known as whooping cough.

The department has tallied a total of 14 positive reports of pertussis since March 16. The reports involve 10 school-age children as well as one infant, two toddlers and one adult.

On Friday, the department sent out a memo to parents of children in the Astoria School District, where all but one of the cases involving schoolchildren have been reported up to now...

SALEM ? The whooping cough outbreak has spread into Oregon Oregon Health officials said Tuesday there have been 294 reported pertussis cases in Oregon, compared with 112 cases in May of 2011.

Eleven infants hospitalized, 10 are 3 months old or younger, officials said...

Whooping Cough Cases on the Rise in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. -- Whooping cough is on the rise, and the number of cases is alarming.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nationwide there have more than 16,000 cases reported this year--more than double the same time period last year.

The same trend is happening in Oregon.

In January through July of 2012, there are 458 confirmed cases compared to just 147 during the same time period in 2011...

Whooping cough nears epidemic levels in Oregon

Oregon is seeing an epidemic of whooping cough this year, and public health officials think low adult immunization rates and the waning potency of vaccinations over time could be partly to blame.

As of Monday Oregon had 525 reported cases of the disease officially known as pertussis, compared with 527 in the same time frame in 2005, the state?s last epidemic. Oregon ended that year with 622 cases...

Pendleton ? Umatilla County health officials have confirmed a school-age child in the east end of the county was diagnosed with pertussis in early August...

...The county has confirmed eight cases of pertussis since Jan. 1. As of Monday, 598 cases had been reported statewide.

Washington has reported more than five times that many cases, with 3,400 confirmed through Aug. 4. Of those, 52 were in Benton County and 32 in Franklin County...
