Three outbreaks now at GNGH
MRSA, VRE and C. difficile all outbreak status at Niagara Falls hospital

The declaration of a MRSA outbreak in a unit at Greater Niagara General Hospital on Thursday now brings the total number of infectious outbreaks at the hospital to three.

In addition to the outbreak of C. difficile that has been linked to four deaths and 15 other cases at the hospital, GNGH is now battling outbreaks of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).

"The message is that we're doing everything we can to bring our outbreak under control," said Dr. Sue Matthews, interim CEO of the Niagara Health System, when asked to respond to Falls residents' fears of visiting their local hospital.

While the MRSA outbreak was declared Wednesday, the VRE outbreak was called on June 21.

Two days after the VRE outbreak was called, the NHS declared a C. difficile outbreak on June 23...

The outbreak of MRSA at the Greater Niagara General Hospital has been declared over.

The outbreak was called in Unit D of the Niagara Falls facility on July 15th, after 4 new patients tested positive for the bug.

Interim Chief of Staff for the Niagara Health System Dr Joanna Hope says the unit's MRSA levels returned to normal Tuesday afternoon.

Interim NHS President & CEO Sue Matthews credits enhanced infection control & prevention measures & staff vigilance for the change.

During their daily media briefing on Wednesday, the NHS announced another 2 deaths of patients with hospital-acquired C.difficile at the St. Catharines General...

The outbreak on Unit C of the Niagara Falls facility was declared June 21st. The Niagara Health system cleared it Friday afternoon after VRE case levels returned to normal...
