As the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario petitions the province to set up H1N1 clinics in schools for elementary students, the local health unit is putting plans in place to do just that.
It would cover children from junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, regardless of their age, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit's medical officer of health says.
Establishing clinics in schools is part of rolling out the vaccine in Phase 2, following the priority group clinics of Phase 1 that are ongoing throughout the county, Dr. Lynn Noseworthy said. Students are close to the top of the Phase 2 list, she said.
The health unit is collecting "absenteeism data" from schools and while the final figures aren't yet in, Noseworthy says she believes they will show a decline.
When in-school clinics for students are to be held depends on "delivery of our vaccine," health unit spokesperson Chandra Tremblay said.
The health unit runs regular vaccination school clinics for everything from seasonal flu to Hepatitis B. Elementary school students will receive letters, information sheets and a consent form through their schools for their parents to read and complete. There will be no need for parents to attend the school with their child if the consent form is used.
There have been no H1N1 outbreaks at hospitals or long-term care facilities within the health unit's area at this time, Tremblay said.
The next H1N1 clinic for priority groups in West Northumberland is on Thursday with unadjuvanted H1N1 vaccine for pregnant woman. It is at the Rose Glen Road health unit office in Port Hope from 3 to 7 p. m.
With the adjuvanted H1N1 (which boosts the effect of the vaccine), the next clinic for Phase 1 priority groups, those most a risk of complications from H1N1, is slated for Friday at the Cobourg Lions Community Centre from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.
For a full listing of clinics, details of who is in the priority group and other information, consult the health unit's web site at www.hkpr.on.caor call 905-885-9100.
There were almost 6,000 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu virus as of the last week in October, seven of them in the local health unit's tri-county area including Northumberland, bringing the local total to 23, according to the Ontario Influenza Bulletin for surveillance week #43.
