C. difficile outbreak at Freeport health centre

KITCHENER ? An outbreak of C. difficile has been declared at the Freeport site of Grand River Hospital.

Five new cases of the contagious bacterial infection appeared at the Kitchener health centre in the past three weeks, prompting staff members to take steps to stop further spread.

All patients are stable.

The outbreak is specific to one unit ? Union Terrace Four, a functional enhancement unit. Three patients there have the illness, along with two patients elsewhere at Freeport who recently contracted C. difficile during their hospitalization. Another patient has been positive for some time.

The five new cases are unusually high for the centre, which had six from January to October.

Grand River is asking the public to delay visits to the affected unit. Those who do come are urged to wash and sanitize their hands before, during and after visits.
