Early flu clinics planned after two early outbreaks in Waterloo Region

WATERLOO REGION ? Public health officials are preparing for an early fight against the flu this year.
Two influenza-A outbreaks have been declared ? one in a retirement home and the other in a long-term care facility ? with four people confirmed with the infection so far.
The region is the first in Ontario to have an influenza outbreak, said Dr. Leana Nolan, Medical Officer of Health.
Public immunization clinics start Monday ? three weeks earlier than usual walk-in community clinics at public buildings. Nobody, however, has yet called to book appointments at the early clinics.
?I don?t think the general public knows the flu is here,? said Linda Black, a nurse in charge of the region?s immunization program.
?It is our belief there is definitely more flu out there in the community.?
