TORONTO ? Ontario is reporting a declining trend in hospitalizations and deaths as the second wave of Swine Flu weakens.
115 people were admitted to hospitals between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2 while 9 people were reported dead for the same period. In the previous reporting week, 216 people were admitted while 16 deaths were reported from Nov. 18 to Nov. 25.
?All measures indicate that influenza activity is lower in week 47 compared to week 46. Starting in week 45 Nov.8-14) influenza activity in Ontario has declined each week,? said a government report.
But Ontario?s ministry of health said the burden of H1N1 was evident in that the volume of cases far outnumbered the totals reported in the five previous flu seasons.
?The number of laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A reported to date in the 2009-2010 season is much higher than in the previous five seasons at this time,? said the health ministry.
?The number of influenza A cases reported during the second wave began to increase in early September, with a maximum number of cases reported in week 44 (November 1 -7). The number of cases reported in each of weeks 43-45 in the second wave of the pandemic was higher than the maximum for any week observed in the first wave. The maximum case volume observed to date in the 2009-2010 season has exceeded the maximum case volume in all of the past five influenza seasons.?
209 people remained in hospital with 80 in ICU, it said. The total hospitalized during the first and second waves was 1,656.
106 babies under 1 were hospitalized with 1 death. 227 children aged 1 to 4 were hospitalized with no deaths, while 324 children aged 5 to 14 were hospitalized with five deaths. Children accounted for the highest hospitalizations but deaths increased with the age of those hospitalized.
People over 25 and under 65 accounted for most deaths. 28 of 151 people over 65 died following hospitalization.
