Peel Public Health investigating case of measles in child who recently travelled abroad

​ A child who recently travelled abroad has been confirmed to have measles, Peel Public Health (PPH) says.

PPH said, in a news release issued on Tuesday, it is investigating the case and has been reaching out to known contacts who may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease.​

The local health agency also released the following six locations in Mississauga where the public may have been exposed.

​A child from Brantford-Brant has been diagnosed with measles after travelling to Europe.

The child is currently hospitalized but no further details have been released about the severity of their illness.​..

'Unique' case of measles discovered in Ontario with unknown source of infection

​ Health officials in York Region say they are investigating a “unique” case of measles as it is unknown how the man contracted the contagious disease.

In a news release on Thursday, York Region Public Health (YRPH) said the patient, who is in his 30s, had not travelled recently and had no contact with anyone ill.

He is the fourth confirmed case of measles in Ontario. The other three cases involved children who recently travelled abroad.​..

Vellore Medical Clinic (10395 Weston Rd. in Woodbridge) on Feb. 26 from approximately 12:10 to 5:30 p.m.

MLHU confirms measles case in London

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is warning the London community that some people may have been exposed to a case of measles.

The health unit believes the person contracted measles while travelling. The infected adult travelled within the city for several days before getting their measles diagnosis.

​The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has confirmed its first case of measles in a resident and believes others may have been exposed...

...The health unit isn't revealing details about the infected person except to say he was immunized and had not travelled recently or been in contact with a known case of measles.

Hamilton health officials investigating measles case in child who passed through Toronto airport

Health officials in Hamilton are investigating a case of measles in a child who recently passed through Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

Hamilton Public Health Services says the child acquired the illness during a recent trip to India and flew back home through Toronto on a flight from Saudi Arabia on March 5.

Officials say individuals who were on Flight SV61 from Jeddah that began at 9:40 a.m. local time and landed in Toronto as well as anyone who may have been in Terminal 3 between the hours of 3:25 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. may have been possibly exposed to the virus.

The child in question is currently isolating at home.​..

Introduction

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus. Symptoms of measles include fever, a red blotchy rash,
red watery eyes and cough. Immunization is the best protection against measles. For children and most
adults born after 1970, this means receiving two doses of measles containing-vaccine (e.g., MMR vaccine).
In Ontario, measles has been rare, owing to the successful elimination of measles in Canada and high
immunization coverage. As a result, measles cases are predominantly associated with travel (often
referred to as “measles importations”). Due to an increase in measles activity globally, Ontario has
begun to see more cases of measles.

This report describes the epidemiology of measles in Ontario from January 1, 2013 to March 13, 2024.
The summary will be updated weekly.

This report includes the most current information available from Ontario’s integrated Public
Health Information System (iPHIS) as of March 13, 2024 at 11:00 am.

Highlights

 As of March 13, 2024, eight confirmed cases of measles were reported in Ontario in 2024.

 All were in individuals born after 1970; four were in unimmunized children and four in adults;
three of the adults were previously immunized with two doses of measles-containing vaccine
and one adult was unimmunized (Table 1).

 Cases occurred in eight different public health units.

 Six cases were associated with travel (i.e., acquisition of measles outside of Canada) and two
cases occurred in individuals with unknown source of exposure (i.e., no history of travel and no
epidemiological link with a confirmed case). There have been no reports of secondary cases
(Figure 1).

A second lab-confirmed case of measles has been identified in Toronto.

The city’s public health agency said that an infant who recently returned from travel has contracted the disease. The child is recovering at home.

The first Toronto case was identified on Feb. 16.​

​ Toronto Public Health is warning that anyone who attended the Agincourt Public Library between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on March 11 may have been exposed. Individuals should monitor for symptoms until April 1 and double check that their vaccinations are up to date...

Simcoe Muskoka health unit says recent measles case a lab error

​The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says the previously reported measles case in the area is now confirmed to be a false positive.

The health unit announced Wednesday that it was notified by Public Health Ontario that due to a laboratory error, the case of measles that had been lab-confirmed positive on March 12 was, in fact, negative for the measles virus.

Given this new information, the health unit’s medical officer of health says there has not been any public exposure to measles from the previously reported case.​..

Confirmed measles case in Durham Region flew into Mississauga airport

The Whitby-based Durham Region Health Department has confirmed a case of measles which flew into Canada through Pearson Airport.

Durham announced the case around 5 p.m. on April 3. It was contracted by a local adult when they travelled abroad. Currently, the patient is isolating at home.

The Health Department is currently investigating the patient’s movement and known contacts who may have been exposed. The Region as also reached out to other effected regions like Peel to collaborate.

The patient flew into Pearson Airport on Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ271. That day, the flight took off from Amman, Jordan at 10:45 a.m. (local time), stopped in Montreal then proceeded to Pearson, landing at 5:30.

The health department says they are not aware of anywhere in Durham where others may have been exposed.​..

Halton’s public health authority has confirmed that there has been a case of measles in the region.

It says the case is travel-related and warning that there may have been potential exposures within the community, specifically at two healthcare centres.

“Public Health is reaching out to known contacts who may have been exposed to the measles virus at the following locations during the dates and times listed below,” the region said Thursday afternoon, sharing the following dates and locations:

​Halton Region is warning residents who visited certain locations in Oakville and Georgetown this month that they may been exposed to the measles virus.

The Region said in an April 30 news release that it was made aware of two confirmed cases of measles that have led to potential exposures in Halton on April 11, 17 and 24.

“Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily through the air,” the Region said.

Halton Public Health is reaching out to known contacts who may have been exposed to the measles virus at the following locations on the dates listed:

• Maple Grove Public School and YMCA Before and After Care, 288 Maple Grove Dr., Oakville, on Thursday, April 11.

• Oakville Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic, including the waiting room and the Compounding Centre Pharmacy, 2540 Postmaster Dr., Oakville, on Wednesday, April 17 from 12:08 to 3:09 p.m.

• Georgetown Medical Associates and Halton Hills Family Health Team, 199 Princess Anne Dr., Georgetown, on Wednesday, April 24 from 9:19 a.m. to 12:02 p.m.

HAMILTON, ON – Hamilton Public Health Services is investigating exposures locally related to four confirmed cases of measles in Hamilton residents.

Three of these cases are in children, one is in an adult, and all four cases have been assessed to be in the same household and related to a previous local case of measles, confirmed by Hamilton Public Health Services on April 17, 2024.

Hamilton Public Health Services has reached out to identified contacts who may have been exposed to the measles virus. The public may have been exposed to the measles virus at the following locations, dates and times, as indicated:

BRAMPTON, ON (May 14, 2024) – Peel Public Health (PPH) is investigating a confirmed case of measles in an adult from Mississauga.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily to those who are not immunized or have not previously had measles. Infants under one year of age, unimmunized pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of complications. All Ontarians are eligible for one or two publicly funded doses of the MMR vaccine based on the healthcare provider’s clinical judgment and the needs of the patient.

PPH is reaching out to known contacts who may have been exposed to the measles virus.

The public may have been exposed at the following locations:

Canada has recorded close to 150 cases of measles so far this year — the highest number of annual cases in nearly a decade.

A measles outbreak in New Brunswick, which has led to at least 44 cases in the province since the end of October, has spilled over into Ontario.

In the last month, Ontario has recorded nine confirmed measles cases and 15 probable cases, all stemming from a travel-related case in New Brunswick, according to Public Health Ontario.

In its most recent epidemiological summary, the agency stated the 24 new Ontario cases occurred between October and November and were reported in three different public health units. None of these units has previously recorded a measles case in 2024.

Of the 24 new cases, 17 were in children or adolescents, all of whom were unvaccinated, according to figures from Public Health Ontario. Six of the seven new adult cases were unvaccinated, while one was previously immunized with a measles-containing vaccine...

A child is in hospital sick with the measles as the health authority in the St. Thomas region warns people they may have been exposed in two different healthcare centres.

Southwestern Public Health said the child was unvaccinated, and others who are not immunized should watch for symptoms for the next 21 days. It said anyone who was in the St. Thomas Emergency Department or in the Aylmer ultrasound and dental clinic last week, could also be at risk of contracting the highly contagious virus.

Canada has seen a national surge in measles cases, with an outbreak currently declared in New Brunswick. The Public Health Agency of Canada says there were 100 cases as of Nov. 2, with Canada marking the first death in 35 years this past spring. An unvaccinated child under the age of five died in Hamilton.

"We are working quite closely with both health care settings to inform all known contacts. I want to stress that there was no gap in infection control processes identified at either location," says Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock.
