Hospital infections from the superbug C. difficile are rising again in Ontario, proving that the antibiotic-resistant pathogen is more challenging than ever, says the president of St. Joseph?s Healthcare in Hamilton.

Dr. David Higgins, head of the hospital where 16 patients infected with C. diff died in an extended outbreak, was referring to figures compiled by the Ontario health ministry showing two years of provincial data on the extent of the hard-to-control infection.

?It just demonstrates this illness is everywhere,? he said Wednesday. ?This infection is becoming a very significant challenge both in the community and in hospitals.?

Ministry figures show C diff infection rates dropped and stabilized after public reporting on the disease became mandatory for hospitals in 2008. But, the ministry says, rates are tracking higher this year over last, and cases acquired in the community are rising...
