For the second time since June, an outbreak of VRE has been declared at Greater Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls.
The outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) at the hospital's Unit C was declared Friday afternoon, according to the Niagara Health System.
"Our infection control measures continue to be in place and we'll continue to monitor this on a daily basis," said NHS spokesperson Caroline Bourque Wiley.
Bourque Wiley said that four new hospital associated cases have been diagnosed on the unit in the last seven days and that an outbreak is declared when there are more than three cases in seven days.
In total there are nine patients with VRE on the unit, Bourque Wiley said, adding that several of those patients are long-term patients at the hospital. Not all of the cases are hospital acquired, she said.
