Ontario is reporting 549 people in hospital with COVID on Thursday, with 118 in intensive care.

This is up by 27 for hospitalizations and an increase of four for ICUs since the previous day.

Last Thursday, there were 670 hospitalizations with 119 in ICU.

According to latest data for hospitalizations, 58 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19. For those in ICUs, 36 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 907 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Thursday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to PCR testing eligibility. The provincial case total now stands at 1,310,525.

The death toll in the province has risen to 13,314 from the previous day as 10 new virus-related death were added. Three of the deaths occurred more than a month ago and were added following data cleanup, according to the report...

Ontario is reporting no net new deaths from COVID-19 for the first time in more than a month, alongside another week-over-week drop in hospitalizations.

It is the first time since May 9 that a 24-hour period went by without any additional deaths being added to the province’s COVID-19 tally, which remains stuck at 13,338.

Meanwhile, all other public health indicators continue to show improvement ahead of a summer that most epidemiologists and public health experts say will see comparatively low levels of viral activity.

The latest data from the Ministry of Health suggests that there are 370 people in hospital with COVID-19.

That number represents an incomplete census as many hospitals don’t report occupancy data on weekends. However, it is down 14 per cent from this time last week and nearly 40 per cent from two weeks ago.

Of the people hospitalized with COVID-19, a total of 112 are in intensive care. At this time last week 116 COVID patients were in ICU units.

Positivity rates on PCR testing are also trending downwards.

Over the last 24 hours 6.5 per cent of all tests processed in Ontario’s labs came back positive, resulting in just 357 confirmed cases. That is the lowest number of new lab-confirmed cases in any 24-hour period since Nov. 2...

Meanwhile, Ontario's wastewater data is beginning to tick upward after a steep downward slope began at the end of April.

There are currently 506 patients with the virus in Ontario hospitals, down from 512 yesterday and from 522 a week ago.

Of those hospitalized patients, 43 per cent were admitted with the virus and 57 per cent were admitted for other reasons and subsequently tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, 115 of those hospitalized patients are in intensive care, down one from yesterday and up one from a week ago.

The ministry says 53 per cent of ICU patients were admitted with COVID and 47 per cent were admitted for other reasons and tested positive for the virus.

Officials say 49 ICU patients are breathing with the help of a ventilator.

Ontario officially moves to weekly reporting of COVID-19 data. Here's what the latest numbers show
As of Thursday, there were 491 people with COVID-19 in hospitals with 109 in ICU
CBC News · Posted: Jun 17, 2022 11:31 AM ET | Last Updated: 6 hours ago

Ontario has officially switched to weekly reporting of COVID-19 data, after more than two years of daily updates.

The last daily data came on Thursday. The change means that, for data specifically, CBC News will also move to publishing weekly stories. The Ministry of Health says that its databases will be refreshed by 2 p.m. on Thursdays.

Providing a clear, full picture about the state of COVID-19 in Ontario has become increasingly difficult over the last several months, after the province restricted lab testing and stopped providing school-related data publicly.

As of Thursday, there were 491 people with COVID-19 in hospitals. That's down from 536 at the same time last week.

Of those patients, 109 were being treated in intensive care. Roughly 55 per cent of people in ICU were admitted due to symptoms from the illness, while 45 per cent were already in critical care when they tested positive for the virus...

Of those in hospital, about 43 per cent are being treated specifically for COVID-19 while the rest of the patients tested positive after admission.

There are 96 people in intensive care with COVID-19 as of June 23 and the province says that about 61 per cent were admitted due to the novel coronavirus.

Ontario's 7th COVID-19 wave is here, top doctor confirms amid exponential growth
Test positivity above 10% for 1st time since May, says province's science advisory table
Shanifa Nasser · CBC News · Posted: Jul 06, 2022 3:22 PM ET | Last Updated: 13 minutes ago

Ontario has officially entered its seventh wave of COVID-19, driven this time by the Omicron BA.5 subvariant, the province's top doctor confirms.

"Sadly yes, we're in another wave," Dr. Kieran Moore told CBC News Wednesday after Ontario's COVID-19 science advisory table pointed to exponential growth in most public health units.

Moore says the province is now reviewing further eligiblity for booster doses and that a decision on that will be coming soon.

The BA.5 subvariant has been rising slowly since early June but really started to "take off" mid-month, becoming a dominant strain, Moore said. Ontario can likely expect another four to five weeks in this wave, which is now in about its third week, he added...

New details are emerging about the severity of Ontario's newest wave of COVID-19, with the province reporting another 33 deaths related to the virus over the last week, as well as rising numbers of hospitalizations and ICU admissions.

The province said there are now 712 hospitalizations due to COVID-19, up from 585 at this time last week. There are 110 patients in intensive care due to the virus, up from 95 last Thursday.

The new numbers come as Public Health Ontario released its latest weekly epidemiological summary, which noted the province's seventh wave of COVID-19 began as early as June 19. Ontario's top doctor only confirmed the newest wave Wednesday, saying the province is now in its third week of the spike...

Ottawa pandemic trends keep rising, notably outbreaks and its hospital load
Its active COVID-19 outbreak count has more than quadrupled this month

A main COVID-19 test site won't close Wednesday as planned.
15,000 vaccine doses for Ottawans last week is an increase from previous weeks.
There's a new patient limit at a Kingston urgent care clinic.
Hospitalizations jump in the Belleville area.

The region is in the seventh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic driven by the BA.5 coronavirus subvariant. It's the first early-summer wave.

In its most recent weekly update, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) said the city's test positivity percentage was very high and its coronavirus wastewater levels were high.

OPH specifically called on more than 250,000 residents with just two vaccine doses to get a third, saying the protection offered by two doses alone is no longer enough...

Ontario is reporting 82 new deaths linked to COVID-19 over the past week, up from 62 the week before, according to the latest provincial data.

The number is more than double the number of new deaths reported at the start of July. The province reported 33 new deaths over the period from July 1 to 7.

The new numbers come as the province contends with a seventh wave of the virus, driven largely by the BA.5 Omicron subvariant, which was declared to have officially begun June 19.

The province is also reporting 1,492 patients hospitalized with the virus, 138 of whom are in intensive care. Of those, 63 patients are on a ventilator.

Those figures are up from 1,483 people in hospital with the virus and 126 requiring intensive care this time last week.

Test positivity was 14.2 per cent Thursday, compared with 15 per cent the same time last week. However that figure is based on testing volume which was down from 14,039 last Thursday to 12,396.

This past January, the province moved to limit PCR testing to high-risk populations and settings only. Experts have said reported case counts are a severe underestimate of the actual extent of COVID-19 in Ontario...
