Ontario logs 1,095 new COVID-19 cases as key measures continue decline
Number of active cases fell to about 17,727 after peaking at nearly 43,000
CBC News · Posted: May 26, 2021 10:32 AM ET | Last Updated: 5 hours ago

Ontario reported 1,095 additional cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday along with 23 more deaths of people with the illness.

With the exception of the 1,039 infections logged Tuesday — the day following the Victoria Day long weekend — it's the fewest new cases since March 16.

It's also considerably down from last Wednesday, when the province reported 1,588 cases. Because testing in Ontario generally follows a weekly cycle, it is usually most helpful to compare the same days of the week.

Labs finished 24,008 tests, far below the system's total capacity, and Public Health Ontario reported a provincewide positivity rate of 5.3 per cent. While overall testing levels have gone down in recent weeks, so too has the rolling average of positivity rates, suggesting that week-over-week, there have been fewer and fewer new cases to find.

The seven-day average of daily cases dropped again to 1,623, its lowest point since March 22.

The number of total active infections also continued its steady decline, down to about 17,727. At the height of the third wave of the pandemic, there were nearly 43,000 active cases in Ontario.

As of Tuesday, there were 1,073 people with COVID-related illnesses being treated in hospitals, 672 of whom were being treated in intensive care. Of those in ICUs, 469, or about 70 per cent, needed a ventilator.

According to Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO), a government agency that does a daily tally of hospitalizations, 30 more COVID-19 patients were admitted to ICUs yesterday. The median stay for ICU patients has grown to nearly 20 days, up from around 11 at the beginning of May.

The additional deaths pushed the official toll to 8,678. The seven-day average of daily deaths stands at nearly 22...

Ontario to begin reopening early as 3rd COVID-19 wave continues to recede
Province to move into Phase 1 of its reopening plan Friday, 3 days ahead of schedule

Ontario will move into the initial phases its reopening plans three days ahead of schedule, the government said Monday, as the province reported its fewest number of new COVID-19 cases in more than eight months.

Steve Clark, minister of municipal affairs and housing, said that the decision was made based on vaccination rates and "continuing improvements in key public health indicators."

The province was initially supposed to begin Phase 1 of the plan, called the Roadmap to Reopen, on June 14. Instead it will take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott told CTV News earlier today that cabinet was meeting to discuss the move.

Phase 1 allows for changes like larger outdoor gatherings, patio dining with up to four people and non-essential retail to open at 15 per cent capacity. Outdoor religious services, group exercise and day camps for children can also begin again, with limitations and health measures in place.

As of Sunday, more than 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in Ontario. About 61.2 per cent of the total population or 72 per cent of those aged 18 and older have now had at least one shot.

The government and Chief Medical Officer of Health David Williams had set a threshold of at least 60 per cent of adults with a first shot before moving ahead with the start of reopening.

Meanwhile, week-over-week COVID-19 trends continue to decline overall.

The province reported 525 further cases of COVID-19 this morning, the fewest since late September 2020.

Labs completed just 15,117 tests and Public Health Ontario logged a positivity rate of 3.6 per cent, but today's case count is well below last Monday, when 916 infections were confirmed with just over 18,000 tests done.
