Online tools and tighter regulation help public health officials spot outbreaks faster
The time between an outbreak of infectious disease starting and it being discovered by health officials has been halved over the past 13 years, according to the results of the first study to look at outbreak detection speeds.
Faster outbreak detection is likely a result of the informal disease reports published on the internet, and the updated International Health Regulations put in place by the World Health Organization (WHO) three years ago, say Emily Chan, of the Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, and colleagues...
