Mount Ayliff ? Three Somali nationals are being treated in an isolation unit in the Eastern Cape after they fell ill with an unidentified disease, the Eastern Cape health department said on Friday.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said a fourth Somali had been declared dead on arrival at Mount Ayliff hospital.

He said the four men arrived in the town of Ntabankulu earlier this week.

They had diarrhoea accompanied by dehydration, severe headaches and vomiting.

As a precaution, the three survivors had been put into isolation. Their condition on Friday was stable.

Doctors suspected that the illness could be meningitis, Kupelo said.

Also as a precaution, the department would track down people they had been in contact with in Ntabankulu, to guard against any possible spread of infection

THE five Somali nationals admitted into isolation wards for suspected meningitis or food poisoning at two Eastern Cape hospitals last week, have malaria, the Health Department said yesterday.


Four of them had arrived in Ntabankulu in Transkei at the beginning of last week, suffering from diarrhoea, dehydration, were vomiting severely, and complained of serious headaches.
One of them died on arrival at the Mount Ayliff Hospital and a fifth, exhibiting the same symptoms, was admitted to Taylor Bequest Hospital in Matatiele last Friday.
They had all been put into isolation wards as a precaution against their disease being contagious.
Health environmental authorities had undertaken to find those that the patients had been in contact with, to safeguard against the possible spread of any infection.
“Tests have found that they have malaria,” Department of Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said yesterday.
Saying their conditions had improved, Kupelo added: “We are relieved that they did not suffer from a contagious condition.” — ntandom@dispatch.co.za
