The rising number of influenza cases ? 88 now laboratory-confirmed ? is putting pressure on a city hospital system that was just beginning to experience a reprieve from bed pressures.

People ill with flu-like symptoms have been flocking to the emergency department at Ramsey Lake Health Centre this week.

That has been causing longer ED wait times, increasing the number of admitted patients in emergency waiting for a hospital bed and ultimately resulting in some surgical cancellations.

Friday morning, there were 31 admitted patients in the emergency department, and 17 surgeries had been cancelled this week, three because there were no beds to put patients in after their operations...
