Hospital battling antibiotic-resistant outbreak in newborn intensive care

The Ottawa Hospital is battling an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among its most vulnerable patients ? newborns in intensive care.
The hospital first reported in November that four babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at its General campus tested positive for MRSA, a bacterium resistant to common antibiotics. At the time, none of the infants had infections related to the bacteria.
Eventually, the outbreak spread to seven babies, including one who became infected. The remaining babies were carriers.
Dr. Kathryn Suh, medical director of infection prevention and control at the hospital, said Friday the number of babies who are positive with MRSA now stands at five and there has not been a new case since Dec. 27...
