Toronto Public health is warning the public about an outbreak of mumps that may be spreading in downtown bars.

The agency is investigating 14 lab-confirmed cases of the contagious disease, and other cases under investigation, with all those sickened between the ages of 18 and 35.

?The investigation to date has identified that many of these cases have frequented bars in the west downtown core of Toronto. This may be a contributing factor in the circulation of this viral infection,? the release states...

At least 17 people now have mumps in an outbreak linked to more than 10 bars in west downtown Toronto.

Dr. Vinita Dubey of Toronto Public Health said Thursday the lab-confirmed cases, up three from the previous day, include two men with the serious complication of painfully swollen testicles.

All those sickened by the highly contagious, virus-triggered infection are between the ages of 18 and 35. Most reported having recently visited bars between Yonge and Dufferin Sts...

A mumps outbreak in Toronto has led to 26 confirmed cases in the city, including one at a public school.

Shari Shwartz, spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board, confirmed to CP24 on Monday that parents of Forest Hill Collegiate were made aware of one case of mumps at the school on Friday. The school then sent out a letter notifying the parents.

Despite the one confirmed case at the high school, the letter, obtained by CP24, told parents they should not be overly concerned...

Two more cases of mumps were discovered at Toronto elementary schools on Tuesday, bringing the city?s total to 28, Toronto Public Health says.

Three of those cases originate from Toronto public schools.

The school board confirmed one case of mumps yesterday but Toronto District School Board spokersperson Shari Shwartz-Maltz told CTV News Toronto Tuesday that there are two new confirmed cases of mumps stemming from two different public schools.

One of the new cases originated at King Edward Public School, on Lippincott Street near College and Bathurst streets.

The TDSB is expected to announce the schools affected at a news conference at around 5 p.m...

Toronto?s mumps outbreak continues to spread; three new cases were confirmed Wednesday, bringing the total to 31 this year.

Toronto Public Health is investigating what health officials say is now a community outbreak.

On Tuesday, the Toronto District School Board confirmed that two of its students were infected with the mumps virus, bringing the total of confirmed cases among students to three.

Despite the three cases found, one in each of three schools, Dr. Vinita Dubey, an associate medical officer with Toronto Public Health, said the virus has mainly affected 18- to 35-year-olds who frequented bars in part of the city?s west end. The affected area is west of Yonge St., east of Lansdowne Ave. and south of Bloor St. W...

City public health officials said they've confirmed "fewer than five" cases so far, but they are on alert in the wake of an outbreak in Toronto.

Anyone born later than 1970 should have received at least one dose of mumps-containing vaccine (usually delivered as MMR: measles, mumps, rubella or MMRV: measles, mumps, rubella and varicella).

Kids, teens, healthcare workers and military personnel should receive two doses...

Toronto Public Health says there are 37 confirmed cases of mumps in Toronto as they continue to investigate an outbreak in the city.

According to TPH, the infected people are mostly between 18-35 years of age.

Four of the cases are related to schools in Toronto, either among staff or students, and were a result of those individuals coming into contact with someone who already had the mumps and not from the school setting.

Four mumps cases have been confirmed in Brampton and Mississauga.

Confirmation of the cases were made last Friday and on Monday, after receipt of laboratory tests.

Peel Region Public Health officials said the two men and two women range in age from 19 to 43.

The three cases in Mississauga and one in Brampton are not acquainted with each other, according to health officials, but they all frequent Toronto, where there have been more than 30 confirmed cases of the viral infection in recent months.

Peel Health said a public notice is not being issued at this time because of the ?small number of cases? locally...

Ryerson University is the latest Toronto-area school to have confirmed mumps cases on campus, bringing the city?s total number to 43.

The manager of operations and strategy of Ryerson?s Recreation and Athletics Centre (RAC), Heather Adam, confirmed that a student within their athletics department had contracted the viral infection.

Adam said the student in question likely had mumps while working as a scorekeeper at the RAC though she did not believe the student contracted it there.

Ryerson students were informed of the confirmed case via email on March 17.

Toronto Public Health says they?ve had two cases related to Ryerson University to date, though it?s unclear when the second case was reported...

An outbreak of the mumps is continuing to spread in the city of Toronto as the number of confirmed cases has grown to 62.

In a news release issued Thursday, Toronto Public Health said that most of the cases are among people between the ages of 18 and 35 years old. As well, five of these cases have been linked to elementary and high schools in Toronto, either among staff or students...

Toronto is dealing with the biggest mumps outbreak the city has seen in at least 25 years, while officials in Nova Scotia say the number of measles cases tied to a recent outbreak now numbers 13 individuals. A number of factors are contributing to the problem, including the fact some people continue to question vaccines, despite overwhelming evidence of their efficacy and safety. While public health messages continue to emphasize the importance of vaccinating children and adolescents, Toronto officials are preparing to target adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who may not realize they are at risk of contracting mumps because of the way vaccination programs were set up when they were children.

Toronto?s mumps outbreak

Toronto Public Health says there have been 68 confirmed cases of mumps in the city since January ? a major jump compared to previous years. Typically, the number of mumps cases in a year will be in the teens. The previous highest number was 34 cases in 1995, followed by 33 cases in 2009 and 31 cases in 2010, according to Toronto Public Health. The vast majority of the individuals affected by this year?s outbreak are between 18 and 35, with a handful of cases involving staff or students of elementary and high schools. Many of the cases are linked to about two dozen bars in the west end of downtown Toronto, with individuals in that age cohort likely transmitting the infection by being in close proximity, sharing food and drinks or coughing and sneezing near one another, said Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer of health with Toronto Public Health.

Eleven per cent of cases in the current mumps outbreak are tied to individuals who were intentionally not vaccinated, Dr. Dubey said.

But among the adults, the reason why there?s so much transmission is that many in the age group weren?t fully vaccinated against mumps and, in some cases, measles by today?s standards...
