Visitor restrictions are in place on the fourth floor of Health Sciences North's Ramsey Lake Health Centre because of an outbreak of clostridium difficile or C. diff.

Five people are in isolation in one area of the medical floor after being infected by the bacteria, which is highly contagious...

Officials at Sudbury's hospital are looking into whether overcrowding and the use of antibiotics are contributing to higher-than-usual rates of Clostridium difficile among patients.

C. difficile is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and other serious intestinal conditions, and is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients in the industrialized world.

Health Sciences North's Ramsey Lake Health Centre staff have been dealing with a C. difficile outbreak since Sept. 12. There are four patients suffering from C. difficile infection on the fourth floor of the hospital and another two on the sixth floor.

The cases on the two floors are not related, said David McNeil, vice-president of clinical programs and chief nursing officer at Health Sciences North...

Two outbreaks of Clostridium Difficile reported at Health Sciences North earlier this fall haven't quite been wiped out.

There's still one case of C. difficile on the fourth floor of the North tower and one on the sixth level of the south tower.

The outbreak on the fourth floor of the north tower was initially declared Sept. 12. There have been 15 cases of C. Difficile in total associated with that outbreak...
