The "highly contagious" Omicron variant is confirmed to be in the N.W.T., public health officials announced in a press release on Sunday afternoon.

An earlier exposure notice has been updated as a result of the confirmed variant.

The exposure notice was for passengers in rows 16 to 22 on the Dec. 13 WestJet flight WS3359 from Calgary to Yellowknife and passengers in rows 23 to 29 on the Dec. 13 WestJet WS280 between Kelowna and Calgary.

Initial guidance said only unvaccinated passengers would need to self-isolate, but in the press release the chief public health officer announced these guidelines have been changed to include everyone in the affected rows no matter their vaccination status...

On New Year's Eve the N.W.T. government reported the number of active COVID-19 cases in the territory reached 160.

According to the territorial government's COVID dashboard, the number of cases increased by 42 in a 24-hour period.

Of the active cases, there are 132 in Yellowknife, four in the Beaufort Delta, three in the Dehcho, eight in Fort Smith, One in Hay River, two in the Sahtu and 10 in the Tłı̨chǫ.

Territorial Health Minister Julie Green tweeted about the latest numbers on Dec. 31, but said "we are not back to square one" as 76 per cent of the territory is fully vaccinated...

No hospitalizations as NWT moves beyond 900 active cases

The Northwest Territories now has 910 active Covid-19 cases but there remain no hospitalizations associated with the current outbreak, data published on Monday suggests.

The active case count has increased by 220 since Friday and now represents a sizeable portion of the territory’s 45,000 or so inhabitants. There were 324 new cases reported since Friday and 104 recoveries.

More than 900 infections – all assumed by territorial health officials to be the Omicron variant – have been reported in the NWT since January began, a figure that took the Delta variant a month and a half.

There remain 62 hospitalizations related to Covid-19 in the territory since the pandemic began, a figure that has not budged since mid-December. Intensive care admissions have remained unchanged in that time – 20 since the pandemic began – as have related deaths in the NWT, all 12 attributed to the Delta variant between August and November last year...

The Northwest Territories is reporting its first COVID-19 hospitalization during the Omicron wave as cases continue to soar on a daily basis.

The government reported on its online COVID-19 dashboard that there have been 63 COVID-19 hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic. There had been only 62 cases reported since at least Dec. 24.

There was no change reported in the number of people admitted to ICU due to COVID-19.

The territory also reported a new record number of active cases across the territory. It posted there are 1,072 cases in the N.W.T.

Of those, the majority continue to be in the Yellowknife area with 599, followed by the Tłı̨chǫ region with 176 and the Beaufort Delta with 115....

The NWT reported a drop of 14 active Covid-19 cases on Tuesday even as 189 new infections were confirmed, illustrating the scale of the Omicron wave and the complexity of the statistical picture.

Increasingly, raw numbers of new and active cases do little to clarify the territory’s situation other than making clear that the healthcare system – and testing infrastructure – remain under significant strain.

While 189 new cases were reported on Tuesday, there were also 203 recoveries, mammoth one-day figures for a territory that reported just five cases in the first six months of the pandemic.

As a result, the active case count dropped from 1,266 to 1,252.

The number of hospitalizations increased by one. There have been eight NWT hospital admissions since Omicron arrived and 70 since the pandemic started in March 2020.

Intensive care admissions were unchanged, as were deaths. The territory’s 13th death related to Covid-19 was recorded on Monday...

The N.W.T. government is reporting the first ICU admission in the territory due to COVID-19 since the Omicron variant became the dominant strain.

The latest numbers show that three people have been admitted to hospital since Monday, when five hospitalizations were reported.

The territory is now reporting 1,300 active cases, 48 more than it counted Tuesday, though those figures may not include people who test positive at home and don't report their test results.

The rise in active cases comes even though the territory logged 90 recoveries from COVID-19. That means more people are still catching the illness than recovering from it. ..

Health officials in the N.W.T. say they expected the Omicron wave of COVID-19 to peak around Jan. 26, but the territory is already starting to see cases decline in many communities, though hospitalizations are rising.

The N.W.T.'s chief public health officer, Dr. Kami Kandola, and Dr. AnneMarie Pegg, the territory's medical director, took questions from the public on The Trailbreaker Thursday morning.

Kandola said the territory was seeing about 180 new cases of the virus a day in mid-January, but that's dropping to about 140 cases a day now. She expects there will still be about 100 new cases a day going into February.

The territory also saw an increase in severe outcomes in the past week. Kandola said nine people have now been hospitalized during the Omicron wave of COVID-19, while one has been admitted to the ICU. The territory also recorded another COVID-related death, for a total of 13...

The Northwest Territories government reported that a fourteenth person had passed away from Covid-19 on Friday, as the number of active cases dropped by 331.

There are now 1,034 active cases across the territory with 496 in the Yellowknife region, 143 in the Tłı̨chǫ region, 140 in the Beaufort Delta, 93 in the Dehcho, 76 in the Hay River area and 42 in Fort Smith.

Chief public health officer Dr Kami Kandola said the “significant decrease” in reported cases is due to changes in isolation requirements. People who are fully vaccinated are considered resolved seven days after a positive test result, diagnosis or onset of symptoms as their likelihood of spreading Covid-19 is considered small...

The Northwest Territories government reported one new death, one additional hospitalization, and one intensive care admission related to Covid-19 on Monday evening.

There have now been a total of 15 deaths, 73 hospitalizations, and 22 intensive care admissions connected to Covid-19 in the territory since the pandemic started.

There are currently 973 active cases across the territory, a drop of 61 since Friday evening...

The Woodland Manor long-term care facility in Hay River, and Mangilaluk School in Tuktoyaktuk, were listed as new Covid-19 outbreak sites on Friday evening.

The territorial government said anyone who was at either location as of Friday should self monitor and, if they develop symptoms, isolate and arrange for testing.

There are now 1,039 active cases of Covid-19 across the NWT, a slight increase from the 1,033 reported on Thursday. According to the territory’s latest figures, there were 161 new infections and 144 newly resolved cases on Friday....

No new Covid-19 related deaths were recorded on Wednesday as cases in the Northwest Territories continued their steady decline.

There were 509 active cases of Covid-19 in the territory as of Wednesday evening, down from 552 the previous day. There have been no new hospital or ICU admissions, and the number of NWT residents killed by Covid-19 remains 19...
