Oklahoma Reports Second Swine Flu Death

Oklahoma City - A Carter County man with underlying medical conditions has become Oklahoma's second swine flu death.
"This death is a sad reminder that the H1N1 flu virus can be a serious threat," said State Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline.
Cline says that in the past week there have been twenty people hospitalized to bring the total to 27 since September first. Thirteen of those hospitalized were 18 years old or younger.
"Most people have little or no immunity to the 'new flu' and the illness may be severe for some," said Cline. "Flu should not be taken lightly. Regular seasonal influenza results in some 36,000 deaths in the nation each year."
Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some persons also report diarrhea and vomiting.
Those who are ill are urged not to go to work or school and to stay away from others as much as possible.
"For mild flu symptoms, it may not be necessary to see a doctor, however, if you are pregnant or have a health condition like diabetes, heart disease, asthma or emphysema, do check with your health care provider about appropriate treatment," Cline said.
Cline also encourages Oklahomans to get their seasonal flu vaccination which is now being offered through health care providers and some pharmacies. She also advises to get the H1N1 flu vaccine once it becomes available.
