In addition to the above, the OK update reported the following:

  • 72.5% (392/540) of patients meeting the ILI criteria were under 24 years of age.
  • 110 of 117 (94.0%) specimens tested at the OSDH Public Health Laboratory (PHL) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive for influenza.
  • Fifty-three percent of hospitalizations have occurred among children 18 years of age or less.

* The percentage of patients meeting the ILI criteria exceeded the 3.5% baseline in all eight regions.
* 69.3% of patients meeting the ILI criteria were under 24 years of age.
* 25.5% rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive; 128 (58.7%) indicated infection with type A viruses and 90 (41.3%) detected type B influenza.
* 91.7% specimens tested at the OSDH Public Health Laboratory (PHL) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive for influenza.

* Fifty percent of hospitalizations have occurred among children 18 years of age or less.
* Three influenza-associated deaths were reported this week. One death in each age group, 0-18 years, 19-64 years, and over 65 years of age, from Wagoner, Caddo and Tulsa counties respectively. All deaths had preexisting conditions and/or complications from secondary bacterial infection. A total of 8 deaths have reported this season.

Oklahoma is a typical example of what will likely occur throughout the U.S. this spring. If you look at the two charts related to the age groups affected and the timing of hospitaliztions it shows that there was a peak several weeks ago and that the demographics are pretty typical for seasonal flu. Many people are seeing this same pattern and claiming that most states are past peak.

However, if you look at the isolates data at the link above, it shows:

"Since September 1, 2010, 344 of 470 (73.2%) specimens tested by OSDH PHL by PCR were positive for influenza. 231 (67.2%) were positive for influenza A (H3), 11 (3.2%) were positive for 2009 influenza A (H1N1), and 102 (29.7%) were positive for influenza B."

So, Oklahoma has had a tough flu season already, including 15 deaths, three of which were children, and yet only 3% of the isolates tested this season have shown to be pH1N1. I'm trying to find out how many of the deaths were from pH1N1 to determine if that is disproportiate with the 3% of isolates tested.

I hope I am wrong, but I suspect that %ILI will continue to drop in states like Oklahoma for a couple of weeks and then pH1N1 will increase dramatically and there will be a second peak, perhaps in March, with many more serious cases.

State flu deaths rise to 21

A Tulsa County resident died from the flu last week, bringing the total number of deaths this season to 21, according to the Oklahoma State Health Department.

The person who died was between 50 and 64.
