Week 40:
1 new death (25-49 age group)

Sentinel surveillance for influenza?like illness revealed less than 1% of outpatient visits met the criteria for ILI during the reporting period from October 3, 2010 through October 9, 2010.

Since September 1, 2010, eight cases of influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported. Five (63%) of eight hospitalizations occurred among children less than 5 years of age; three have occurred among adults 25-49 years of age. All hospitalizations had influenza rapid or IFA positive test results. Two specimens were forwarded to the Public Health Lab for PCR testing and were negative.

* Five (56%) of nine hospitalizations have occurred among children less than 5 years of age; one has occurred in the 5-18 age group and three have occurred among adults 25-49 years of age.

* Four regions had notable increases in the percentage of outpatient visits due to ILI: southeast, central, northwest, and central. There were no positive rapid tests from sentinel physicians or laboratories in these regions.
* 5.2% (7/134) of rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive.
* None of the 11 respiratory specimens tested at OSDH Public Health Laboratory for influenza by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive.
* Since September 1, 2010, thirteen cases of influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported to OSDH; four were reported during October 17?23.
* Hospitalizations have occurred among residents of the following counties: Tulsa, Oklahoma, Muskogee, Cherokee, Rogers, Osage, Wagoner, and Sequoyah.
* All hospitalizations were influenza positive by rapid antigen test. One case was PCR positive for influenza A 2009 H1.
* No influenza-associated deaths were reported this week. Since the beginning of the 2010-2011 season, one death has been reported.

* 4.9% (7/142) of rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive; 5 (71.4%) indicated infection with type A viruses and two detected type B influenza.
* One of the five specimens tested at OSDH Public Health Laboratory by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was positive for influenza A (H3N2). The positive specimen was collected from the northeast region.

ILI: 3.4% (The percentage of patients meeting the ILI criteria exceeded the 3.5% baseline in the Tulsa county and southeast regions.) 80% (82/103) of patients meeting the ILI criteria were under 24 years of age.

5.9% (9/152) of rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive; 8 (88.9%) indicated infection with type A viruses and one detected type B influenza.

Three of the nine specimens tested at OSDH Public Health Laboratory by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive for influenza B. The positive specimens were collected from the Tulsa County region.

4.2% (8/191) of rapid influenza tests performed by sentinel laboratories were positive; 6 (75.0%) indicated infection with type A viruses and two detected type B influenza.

Two of the six specimens tested at OSDH Public Health Laboratory by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive for influenza A (H3N2). Positive specimens were from the northeast and Oklahoma county regions.

Charts from Week 4. Although only 2 of 104 isolates have been pH1N1 (and I don't know when those were detected), the sharp increase in %ILI, coupled with growing hospitalizations of younger people suggests that it might be circulating in OK.

94% positive for influenza. (Since September 1, 2010, 214 of 318 (67.3%) specimens tested by OSDH PHL by PCR were positive for influenza. One hundred fifty-two (71%) were positive for influenza A (H3), five (2.3%) were positive for 2009 influenza A (H1N1), and fifty-seven (26.7%) were positive for influenza B.)
