H1N1 vaccine trials pushed back

MEG ALEXANDER REPORTING

August 26, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY -- We've heard that there will be significantly less of the H1N1 flu vaccine available in the early months of fall. We now know clinical trials of the vaccine are behind as well. IPS Research in Oklahoma City is one of the national testing sites for young children and older adults. They have had to push back the start date on the trials twice because the test vaccine isn't available yet.

Dr. Louise Thurman from IPS says it stems from the government being too optimistic and some scientific variables,

"There's been a delay getting the virus from which the vaccine is manufactured to the pharmaceutical companies to actually get the vaccine started. From what I understand, this strain of virus is a little more slow growing than what they anticipated."

Thurman believes this delay could push the vaccine's availability to as late as November.

November huh? And the beat goes on...

Are these the related cause and effect statements?

Since they're not specifically linked, it could imply there are other "scientific variables."

But then, all this information is being regurgitated by a media writer.

Maybe if we don't want to loose any considerable vaccinations in time,

time is come to start thinking of an safe vaccine adjuvant, so if it goes nasty ...

or maybe not ...

I'm not sure what they consider scientific variables so this probably is a non-issue; but I seem to recall at one point not so long ago, we only had half enough syringes in our national stockpile. I can't find the link, though.

Leavitt did a good job of keeping us informed on the pandemic planning progress. This is from his last updatein January; I'm wondering what the "other supplies" are and if they were purchased?

# We have obligated $100 million for the purchase of ventilators, syringes, intravenous antibiotics, and other supplies for potential distribution in case of an influenza pandemic.

Yes, my recollection is also that there is a significant shortage.
