NEWARK ? If Licking County residents find themselves feeling an uncomfortable rumble in their abdominal areas, it might be the so-called ?stomach flu? making its way around Licking County.
Dr. Joel Anders, of Licking Memorial Hospital, said in the past few weeks he has seen more people coming in complaining of symptoms consistent with stomach flu.
Although commonly referred to as stomach flu, the vomiting- and diarrhea-inducing illness is not really the flu, but a gastrointestinal illness called gastroenteritis.
?Influenza normally does not have much to do with the stomach,? Anders said. ?Sometimes people call (gastroenteritis) the stomach flu, but it?s a separate abdominal virus that is totally unrelated (to influenza).?

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The winter stomach bug is making hundreds in central Ohio sick.
A new strain of the norovirus, called the Sydney strain because it first was identified in Australia, swept through Europe and Japan before arriving in Ohio.
The Columbus Public Health Department reported that labs have confirmed around 100 cases in the city since November.
NEWARK ? Two children at the Licking County Family YMCA child care center have tested positive for norovirus, the most common cause of the stomach flu, according to the Licking County Health Department.
The health department received a call Friday alerting staff to a possible stomach virus outbreak, Health Commissioner Joe Ebel said. The department?s epidemiologist and communicable disease staff began investigating the reported illness and took stool samples from several of the affected children.
Possibly four children and two staff members had reported having symptoms consistent with a stomach virus, Ebel said. Two of the three samples taken came back positive for norovirus Tuesday.
Towslee stomach flu outbreak could affect entire Brunswick district

BRUNSWICK - Brunswick City Schools officials believe a teacher appreciation luncheon at Towslee Elementary last week may have been the source of a norovirus outbreak that resulted in the school being closed May 17.
?Last week was teacher appreciation week at Towslee and a luncheon was arranged ? 15 teachers were out sick the next day,? Superintendent Michael Mayell said. ?Initially it affected only teachers, so although we don?t know for sure, we believe that to be the source.?
The highly contagious, flu-like condition soon spread to several students.
District officials were not able to provide the exact number of students out sick at the time of this report.

BRUNSWICK, Ohio ? Classes are canceled at all 10 of the Brunswick City School District?s elementary and middle schools until Tuesday, May 28 due to a rapidly spreading norovirus.
Superintendent Michael Mayell made the decision after consulting with the Medina County Board of Health.
The schools have seen an alarming number of sickouts in recent days.
?It must be pretty bad if they?re going to shut down the schools,? said Jenny Deighton, a Brunswick mom. ?Obviously they wouldn?t shut it down for no reason.?
