Miami Valley Hospital officials said bacteria has been found in the hospital's water supply. At least four patients are sick, said a hospital spokesperson. During an afternoon news conference, officials said the water in the hospital's new addition is contaminated with bacteria causing Legionnaire's Disease. Symptoms are much like a cold and include fever, chills, and a cough. However, symptoms can be very serious for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Hospital officials said they found out about the contamination on Tuesday. They are working with county and state health experts to tackle the problem. OH hospital: Patients confirmed with Legionnaire's
Feb 24, 2011 9:10am Email Print DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? A hospital in Ohio says four patients over 60 have confirmed cases of Legionnaire's disease, possibly from contaminated water in a new hospital building.
Officials at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton say one of the patients remains hospitalized while the other three have been discharged. The Dayton Daily News reports the hospital has declined to comment on the condition of the four, all heart patients.
The hospital is investigating whether the bacteria came from plumbing in its $135 million patient tower, which began admitting people in December. Dozens of other patients in the tower were notified Wednesday.
Legionnaire's is a potentially deadly form of pneumonia caused by waterborne bacteria. The Daily News reports the illnesses were confirmed through tests earlier this month that identified an "unusual cluster" of cases.

Confirmation of another case came as hospital officials expressed hope all those infected have begun exhibiting symptoms and the number of new cases would diminish.
The hospital also confirmed a single case of Pontiac fever, a milder infection caused by the same type of Legionella bacteria responsible for Legionnaires? disease. That brings the total number of cases to 11: nine in Montgomery County, and one each in Warren and Greene counties...
