Northeast Ohio Local health expert talks flu, norovirus, other illnesses spreading fast

​CLEVELAND (WJW) – “We’re seeing an increase in workers, even our own employees, more patients admitted to the hospital,” said Dr. Amy Edwards with University Hospitals.

Cold and flu season is in full swing in Northeast Ohio.

“We are seeing flu, RSV, walking pneumonia, regular pneumonia, respiratory infection after respiratory infection,” said Edwards.

Dr. Andrea Knighton with Akron Children’s said influenza A and RSV are both on the rise.

“At Akron Children’s, we are seeing all different things. Regular cold symptoms, croup, GI symptoms, just a smattering of viruses right now,” said Knighton.

Ohio’s first pediatric flu death of season reported in Miami Valley

GREENE COUNTY — Greene County has reported the first pediatric flu death in Ohio for the 2025-26 season.​


Greene County Public Health said Wednesday that “a previously healthy teen” under the age of 18 died from the flu.

Donald Brannen, PhD, Community Epidemiologist, confirmed the teen was a 16-year-old girl from Beavercreek.

“Our concerns are with the family and our community during this time. This is a sad and serious event that breaks our hearts,” Health Commissioner Melissa Howell said in a statement.

Health officials emphasized that while most flu infections result in mild illness, some symptoms could require urgent medical attention. Some symptoms parents and caregivers should watch for in children include trouble breathing, bluish skin or lips, declining alertness, dehydration, and worsening fever and/or cough.

After a dramatic rise in flu cases more kids are being hospitalized

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - More children are being hospitalized for complications related to the flu.

Dr. Amy Edwards is a pediatric infectious disease specialist.

She told 19 News there has been a rise in the number of cases she has been consulting on.

“This patient came in with influenza A, and now they have a severe complicated pneumonia with a chest tube,” said Edwards. " Or they’re on a breathing machine.”

Her patients cover the pediatric spectrum. Some are as young as 5, and others are almost adults.

“This year, the variant is definitely more severe in children,” said Edwards.​

Over In summit County the health department is seeing an increase in cases much like the rest of the nation.​

New data shows a huge spike in cases at the beginning of December.

In two weeks the county went from having 39 positive flu tests to 340.

Child, teenager die of flu-related illness in Lucas County, health department says

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department (TLCHD) has confirmed two flu-related pediatric deaths in Lucas County, according to a press release.

On Wednesday, TLCHD said a child under the age of six and a teenager under the age of 18 in Lucas County have died.

“Our hearts are with the families who are grieving the loss of their children,” said Health Commissioner Karim Baroudi. “Influenza is a serious illness that can lead to severe complications, especially in children. We want families to know that precautions, vaccination, and early care are critical tools in reducing risk.”

The Ohio Department of Health reports that the state typically sees between one and seven influenza-associated pediatric deaths each season.

For the 2025-2026 flu season, Ohio has now reported three deaths, according to the release.​

TLCHD will host a walk-in flu vaccination day on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is required.

The health department says parents and caregivers should seek medical attention immediately if a child experiences difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, bluish lips or face, dehydration or extreme exhaustion.
