Officials investigate possible MRSA outbreak at local hospital

By Ben Sutherly, Staff Writer Updated 5:35 PM Friday, July 23, 2010

DAYTON — State and local health officials confirmed Friday, July 23, they are investigating a possible outbreak of MRSA traced to a Montgomery County hospital.

The outbreak involves three people who were possibly infected at a single hospital and involves no fatalities, said Jen House, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Health. She declined to identify the hospital, pending the receipt of test results, probably on Monday or Tuesday.

The hospital apparently learned of the possible infection this week, and the state Department of Health was notified midweek, House said.

State testing possible MRSA samples from Dayton

By Dave Larsen, Staff Writer Updated 5:36 PM Monday, July 26, 2010

DAYTON — The medical director for Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County confirmed late Monday morning, July 26, that Miami Valley Hospital is cooperating with state and local health officials regarding a possible outbreak of MRSA at the hospital.

Miami Valley Hospital “had three different people with MRSA infections that were diagnosed in a two- or three-day period,” said Dr. Thomas Herchline, medical director for Public Health.

The hospital has sent samples of the bacteria that grew from those infections to the Ohio Department of Health for testing. “The additional test is just to identify if they are identical isolates or if they are different strains,” Herchline said.
