EAST COLUMBUS (Rob Wells) -- Medical experts say it was diagnosed in the 1960s. Now they wonder if a virus strain that affects young patients is back in Central Ohio.

Doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital says there's been a 20% increase in the number of young patients admitted over the weekend with respiratory problems. Now they wonder if Enterovirus D68, which has symptoms similar to asthma, may be back in Franklin County...

Children's Hospital Seeing Spike in Cold Virus and Complications

DAYTON -- Officials from Dayton Children's Hospital say they are seeing double the number of patients suffering from the rhinovirus, or the common cold. In face, the hospital saw 215 cases just last month.

The cold virus is not normally seen at this level in late summer. The virus has also been more severe, causing asthma-like symptoms and landing some kids in the emergency room...

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? A rare respiratory virus that has sickened more than 1,000 children in 10 states may now be hitting kids in Northeast Ohio, hospital and public health officials believe. But it's no cause for panic.

The virus, human enterovirus 68, or HEV68, is similar to rhinoviruses, which cause the common cold. It hasn't been officially identified as the source of the illnesses, but doctors at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital suspect it may be the culprit behind about 100 similar cases in the Cleveland area in the past couple of months...

...Rainbow is working with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health to send samples from sick children to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing to determine the type of virus causing the infection.

The Cleveland Clinic has seen an uptick in the number of cases of children with respiratory illness over the past six weeks, but hasn't tested any of these kids for the HEV68 virus. MetroHealth Medical Center and Akron Children's Hospital haven't seen any cases of the virus yet, but MetroHealth's Dr. Abdulla Ghori said an increase in the proportion of kids with asthma admitted to the hospital might be due to HEV68. The hospital, like most others, hasn't been testing for the virus because it is so rare, and a child would receive the same treatment regardless...

Medical officials admitted a record number of children to a local hospital over the weekend because of what they believe to be a rare respiratory virus spreading throughout the country.

Although there's been no confirmed cases of the enterovirus at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, officials admitted 540 patients Friday, said Dr. Derek Wheeler, associate chief of staff at the hospital.

The previous record was around 515, Wheeler said...

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) ? The Ohio Department of Health believes the number of cases of Enterovirus D68 is on the decline in the Buckeye State.

This as the state health department is now reporting eight confirmed cases of EV-D68 at Dayton Children?s Hospital and 11 confirmed cases at Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center.

A spokeswoman says the hospitals had to send the tests to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and that a backlog is why they are just now getting confirmation.

The state health department says the tests were sent to the CDC back in September and returned between October 15 and 21...
