Cattle killed by tick bite in Adams County

WEST UNION, Ohio | Cows are dying in Adams County as a result of anaplasmosis, a disease cased by a tick bite, according to local officials.

There have been at least 17 cattle fatalities in the last year in the area, according to Caleb Grooms, owner of Chapparel Feed.

Anaplasmosis is tranmitted by tick bites, so as the weather warms, the number of deaths could increase.

The disease was previously known as granulocytic ehrlichiosis and can infect humans. It is spread by the black-legged tick, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports
