Ohio - Avian influenza in wild birds 2024 - 2026

Vultures in Pierce Township Died of Bird Flu

Vulture-1-1170x640.png

Preliminary lab test results for the dead vultures found in Pierce Township indicate the birds died from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), H5, otherwise known as the “bird flu.” The risk of bird flu to the public is low.

Clermont County Public Health was notified of approximately 70 dead black vultures found on private property in Pierce Township. On Dec. 5, two birds were delivered to the state laboratory for testing.

Samples have been forwarded to the national lab for further confirmation. It will take 10 days to receive the final report to confirm the presumptive HPAI diagnosis as the cause of death. Because of the initial screening result for HPIA, the lab will not move forward with additional testing.

Avian influenza is spread naturally in wild birds, poultry, and other animal species through contact with respiratory droplets and bodily fluids. The current strain, which is known as H5N1, has been found in wild and domestic bird populations since 2022 throughout the country, including Ohio. Transmission of bird flu in wildlife can increase in the spring and fall with bird migration.

People can get sick with bird flu when they encounter infected birds or animals, but this is very rare in the United States. As a general precaution, people should observe wildlife from a distance and avoid contact with sick or dead animals. Likewise, bird owners or people who have backyard flocks should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds.

If you encounter sick or dead birds, it is important to Report, Protect Yourself, and Monitor Your Health.

Report
  • For sick or dead raptors (such as bald eagles), multiple waterfowl (like geese or ducks), or any other large congregation of sick or dead birds, contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at 800-WILDLIFE (945-3543).
  • To report any other sick or dead wild bird, use the ODNR Wildlife Reporting Tool.
  • For sick or dead birds in backyard/hobby flocks, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture at (614) 728-6220 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) or after hours at (888) 456-3405.
  • For sick or dead birds in commercial poultry flocks, contact the Ohio Poultry Association at (614) 882-6111.

Protect Yourself

If you must handle sick birds or other animals, you should:
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) to the greatest extent you can. Wear disposable gloves, a well-fitting face mask (preferably an N95), eye protection like goggles, coveralls, and rubber boots. You can buy these items online or at many retail, hardware, or feed stores.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after touching birds or sick animals.
  • Try to avoid touching the bird’s body. Use a shovel or tool, if possible.
  • If local or state officials advise you to dispose of a wild dead bird, double bag the body and throw it away in your regular trash.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes after contact with birds or animals or after handling materials that may have been in contact with them.
  • Change and wash your clothing after contact with sick birds or animals.

Monitor
If you have been exposed to sick or dead birds, you should monitor your health for 10 days after your last exposure to the birds or their environment. Monitor yourself daily for symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, eye irritation, headaches, body aches, fatigue, or runny/stuffy nose.

If you develop any of these symptoms, contact your local health department and mention your exposure. Seek medical care and notify your provider of your potential exposure to bird flu.

Ohio experts warn to avoid dead birds amid avian flu outbreak
Feb 17, 2026

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — One of the area’s leading experts in wild birds is warning people and pets to stay away from dead birds, as there appears to be an outbreak of Avian influenza — commonly called the bird flu.

Dead birds, mostly Canada geese, are showing up around bodies of water in the area. The bird flu is highly contagious, so the handling of dead birds should be done with care.

Heather Merritt is the director of Canfield’s Birds in Flight Sanctuary. It was Merritt who pointed First News to Perkins Park, where we found at least four dead Canada geese.

“We are getting multiple calls on dead birds,” Merritt said. “It’s avian influenza, which is a highly pathogenic, very contagious virus that the birds are carrying, and people need to stay away from them and keep their pets away from them.”

“We saw it last year for the first time in high volume. This year, in the last four or five days, we’re getting 60-80 calls a day, which is much higher than last year,” Merritt said.

Merritt strongly stressed that people and pets should stay away from dead birds. She said what to do if they find them.

Dead birds washing up in Ohio waterways. Is it avian influenza?

Chad Murphy
Akron Beacon Journal

Feb. 19, 2026, 10:23 a.m. ET

Dead birds recently washing up along Ohio's waterways have some on social media wondering what's going on and if bird flu is the cause.
...
Heather Merritt, director of the Birds in Flight Sanctuary in Canfield, Ohio, told WKBN that bird flu is to blame.
...
Merritt said cases are picking up because of the recent thaw. The deep freeze cut off water sources for birds. Since the temperatures have been rising, birds are congregating at the openings in the ice to drink, spreading the virus.

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Samples from crows found dead at WKBN’s property tested positive for Avian Influenza, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources confirmed.
...
Earlier this week, 14 dead crows were found on WKBN’s property after reports across the area of other dead birds. They were found after a Canada goose also tested positive for the H-5 strain on Feb. 10 in Mahoning County and later died.

Meanwhile, large numbers of Canada Geese and crows continue to be found dead, and officials are warning the public to stay away from them.
