COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) — Waterfowl recently found dead in three Northeast Ohio counties are presumed to have been infected with bird flu, state officials said. Samples of their remains are now being tested for the disease.

The dead birds — including Canada geese, trumpeter swans and one mallard — were found in Auglaize, Erie, Huron, Lucas, Mercer, Montgomery, Richland, Sandusky and Warren counties, according to a Tuesday news release from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

A dozen Canada geese and eight trumpeter swans, all wild or free-ranging, have been found dead in one location in Sandusky County since Dec. 11, according to a tracker on the United States Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center website...

AVIAN INFLUENZA SUSPECTED IN SOME OHIO WATERFOWL (Presumed positive)

12/31/24

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has collected and submitted samples from multiple dead wild birds to test for the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Ohio. While awaiting test results from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory, the Division of Wildlife is considering reports of dead birds in Auglaize, Erie, Huron, Lucas, Mercer, Montgomery, Richland, Sandusky, and Warren counties as presumed positive for HPAI.

Over the last few weeks, Canada geese, trumpeter swans, and one mallard have been reported dead and are being tested.

HPAI has been detected in several states in recent months. The Division of Wildlife is working closely with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other state and federal agencies to monitor HPAI. The virus does not present an immediate public health concern but avoid handling sick or dead birds as a precaution.

All Ohioans can report sick or dead wild birds suspected of HPAI at 800-WILDLIFE (945-3543) or wildohio.gov. The following bird species should be reported:
  • Any raptor, such as a bald eagle.
  • Waterfowl, such as geese or ducks.
  • Any other large congregation of sick or dead birds.
HPAI occurs naturally in bird populations and is monitored closely by the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center. Native Ohio birds such as shorebirds, raptors, and waterfowl are vulnerable to HPAI. Domestic chickens and turkeys are also vulnerable to HPAI. The virus is transmitted from bird to bird through feeding and interactions. More information about HPAI is available at aphis.usda.gov.

The mission of the Division of Wildlife is to conserve and improve fish and wildlife resources and their habitats for sustainable use and appreciation by all. Visit wildohio.gov to find out more.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov/.

Bird flu suspected in Sandusky County

Trumpeter swans and Canada geese have been found dead in Sandusky County and are being tested for bird flu. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is recommending precautions.

The Wildlife Health Information Sharing Partnership Event Reporting System shows current cases of possible highly pathogenic avian influenza pending investigation in Sandusky County. Cases of 12 dead Canada Geese and 8 trumpeter swans were found near Vickery; authorities started an investigation on Dec. 11, 2024.

“When we are looking at a suspect case of avian influenza, we are usually looking at six or more birds,” said Sarah Schott, an ODNR Division of Wildlife communications specialist. “If it’s a bird, or two, it’s hard to presume it’s avian influenza because if it’s just one bird, it might be a vehicle strike, it might just be a random death.”

She said that these numbers of dead in Vickery, all within a day or two, are suspected to have died of the disease.

“That’s a sizable number,” Schott said. “Numbers can get very high, especially when we are dealing with waterfowl because they are interacting so close together and forming large flocks.”

Schott warned of a risk to domestic poultry.

“Domestic poultry are very susceptible to avian influenza. The mortality rate is very high for them,” she said. “If people have backyard poultry, they should take extra precautions.”

She recommends limiting exposure to wild birds, with the highest probability of bird-to-bird contact taking place with free-range flocks.

“I would suggest keeping them closed off and trying to limit that contact with wild birds,” Schott said. “That is, a lot of times, how our domestic poultry get that and have a mortality event. Keep food and water resources in a contained area — where wild birds cannot access that and exchange that saliva contact — it's a pretty good preventative measure.”

Sandusky County Health Department Director Bethany Brown said that there have not been any human cases in the county.

The press release announcing the investigation of the Sandusky County cases comes on the heels of cases more than 50 dead wild geese in Huron and Logan counties, and a much larger domestic chicken situation in Darke County.

Schott noted that the commercial case in Darke County was with laying hens; close to 1 million birds had to be euthanized on Dec. 27 in the Darke County incident. She recommended owners of domestic flocks refer to the Ohio Department of Agriculture for specific prevention methods.

No cases are currently being investigated in Ottawa County.

“This list of counties is changing rapidly,” Will Babb of the ODNR Division of Wildlife said. “Once we see a few more reports of six or more, we will add that county to the list.”

All Ohioans can report sick or dead wild birds suspected of HPAI at 800-WILDLIFE (945-3543) or wildohio.gov. The following bird species should be reported:

Bird flu in Stark County? State says there are a number of suspected cases in wild birds

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is suspected to be spreading among wild birds in the Akron-Canton area, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The department said the spread in Stark County has been minor so far with minimal waterfowl deaths.
-snip-

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife monitors the state for potential bird flu cases. The division ships samples of dead birds to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory for testing when at least six dead birds are found within a week from a particular location.

Test results can take weeks to months to come back.

Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department raising awareness of bird flu

OCT 30, 2025

PARKERSBURG — The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department is raising awareness of the H5N1 avian bird flu and other diseases that affect animals and humans on One Health Day Nov. 3.

One Health Day encourages the One Health approach that recognizes the connection between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.

One Health means that public health is involved, along with other experts, in working together to improve the health of not only people, but animals that include pets, livestock and wildlife, as well as the environment.

H5N1, the avian bird flu, is an example of a zoonotic disease that can be spread between animals and people. More than half of all infections people can get are this type of disease.

To protect themselves and other animals from bird flu, those with backyard flocks are advised to not touch sick or dead birds, their litter and any surface they may have had contact with and should wear personal protective equipment while dealing with them. Keep other animals away from the birds and their equipment, which includes livestock and pets, and watch for signs of illness in them if they have been exposed.

Those interested in learning more about H5N1 can visit the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department’s website, www.movhd.com/h5n1 and can also sign up for the department’s newsletter at that link. Learn more about One Health Day at https://www.cdc.gov/one-health/about/index.html

Approximately 70 dead vultures were found on the campus of St. Bernadette School in Pierce Township. On Dec. 5, CCPH sent two birds for lab testing to determine their cause of death, specifically if highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) – the “bird flu” - was a factor. Lab results are expected back next week.

The risk of bird flu in people is very low. Bird flu commonly has been found in wild birds across the country (including Clermont County) within recent years. As a general precaution, always observe wildlife from a distance! Here are steps to take if you encounter a sick or dead bird: https://ccphohio.org/bird-flu/

PIERCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Ohio wildlife officials cleaned up the carcasses of 72 black vultures on Friday morning, which were splayed across the ballfields and campus of a Clermont County elementary school.

Pierce Township officials said the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) initially refused to clean up or test the dead birds and only agreed to help hours after being contacted by the WCPO 9 I-Team.
...
An ODNR spokesperson said the agency does not typically collect dead wildlife, but decided to help “for this unique circumstance.”

“The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has conducted testing of other dead wild birds in Clermont County, and we have been advised that those other birds are ‘presumed positive’ for HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) … once a presumed positive case is identified in a county, all additional dead birds found in groups of six or more are also presumed to be HPAI and are treated as such. Therefore, the vultures in this case are presumed to be positive for HPAI, however, ODNR is working to collect additional samples to send for testing due to this unique circumstance,” according to a statement from ODNR.
