By Sienna Brooks
Published on January 07, 2026

Cuyahoga County is on high alert due to a recent measles outbreak among a cluster of unvaccinated children. On Wednesday, county health officials confirmed two cases and flagged one additional case as probable within the same household. Critiquing the neglectful avoidance of available immunizations, County Board of Health Spokesperson Kevin Brennan stressed the situation by stating, "Measles is a preventable illness, meaning that there is a dedicated vaccine available to stop children from contracting measles and becoming sick," as reported by Cleveland19...

Measles in Cuyahoga County: 3 pediatric cases reported

By Julie Washington, cleveland.comAdvance Local Express Desk

CLEVELAND, Ohio — There are three pediatric cases of highly contagious measles in Cuyahoga County — one confirmed and two probable, health officials said Wednesday.

All three patients live in the same household and all three are unvaccinated, officials said.

A case is called probable when a patient meets the clinical criteria for a disease, but lacks confirmation from lab results.

The sick children were exposed to other children with measles during holiday travels, health officials said. All household members have been seen by medical professionals and are isolating until the illness passes.

These confirmed and probable measles cases come after Ohio’s 2025 measles outbreak— which caused 44 recorded cases in the state — was declared over in June. That outbreak also saw cases in eight Ohio counties, including Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Franklin and Knox counties...

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Department of Health has announced a potential measles exposure at the John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

This warning comes as Ohio records a sharp increase in measles cases during the first two months of 2026.

While the state confirmed a total of 45 cases throughout 2025, there have already been nine reported cases since the start of this year.

Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, director of the Ohio Department of Health, said that individuals who were at the airport during the specified hours should monitor themselves for symptoms.

Health officials identified the potential exposure window as between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Feb. 18.

Those who were present should watch for signs of the illness until March 11...

SANDUSKY — The Ottawa County Health Department is tracking a measles case that made a student in the Put-in-Bay school system ill.

“The Ottawa County Health Department, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Health, is notifying the public of one confirmed case of measles identified this week in Ottawa County,” the health department said in a news release issued Friday.

“At this time, this does not constitute an outbreak, as an outbreak is defined as more than one confirmed case. The individual associated with this case is no longer infectious, and no additional cases have been identified,” the news release said.

The health department said it has completed contact tracing and described risk to the health department as low.

The health department did not identify the location of the case, but in a letter sent Tuesday to parents, the superintendent of Put-in-Bay’s school system, Scott Mangas, reported it was one of the district's students.

“We are writing to inform you that a student in the Put-in-Bay Local School District has been diagnosed with measles. The student is currently receiving appropriate care and is not attending school,” Mangas wrote...

University Hospitals announced a possible incidence of measles exposure at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and Cleveland Medical Center.

A person who lives in Pennsylvania visited someone at the hospital on Aug. 2, the hospital system said in a news release Aug. 7. The next day, the person showed symptoms of measles and was clinically diagnosed.

The hospital said the visitor was in the UH Rainbow Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Rainbow's main entrance lobby, elevator 73 and the Cleveland Medical Center atrium between 11:07 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Beacon Journal news partner News 5 first reported.

Anyone who is not vaccinated and was in those parts of the facilities between 11:07 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. is asked to contact their local health department, UH officials said. The virus is transmissible up to two hours after an infected person leaves, hence the additional timeframe...
