ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- On Friday, the state Department of Health will offer vaccinations to people who might have been exposed to a measles case in Albuquerque. Health officials said a 15-year-old girl from India, who's at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, brought the measles with her.

Health officials said people could have been exposed at the fair, as well as the MCM Elegante Hotel on Menaul from May 12 to 16, the Fairfield Inn on Menaul from May 16 to 17, and the Wal-Mart at Carlisle and Menaulon Monday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The health department will offer vaccinations at EXPO New Mexico for attendees and others on Friday.

Health officials said the measles are very contagious and they've nearly been wiped out in the United States.

Symptoms include rashes, high fever, a cough, runny nose or red eyes. Those could eventually lead to ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis and in rare cases, death.

In an effort to prevent the spread of measles, the New Mexico Department of Health is working with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find people who might have been exposed to measles on airline flights or at airports.

A 15-year-old girl from India who came down with the measles and exposed other students and members of the public at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque last week is one of many people who traveled from out-of-state to attend the event.

?We have talked with health officials in 46 states and 51 countries to help them track people who may have been exposed to measles here,? department spokeswoman Deborah Busemeyer said. However, no other cases have turned up.

People who were at the MCM Elegante hotel in Albuquerque between May 12 and 16, or the Fairfield Inn on May 16 or 17, should have their need for vaccination evaluated by a health professional, according to a Health Department news release. Call 866-850-5893 for more information.
