Officials issue advisory regarding distemper outbreak found in raccoons in south Winnipeg

Provincial officials have issued a public advisory about a canine distemper outbreak found among raccoons along the Seine River in south Winnipeg.
The Chief Veterinarian's Office and Manitoba Conservation issued the advisory Wednesday afternoon.
During the past four months, there have been a number of cases of raccoons found with canine distemper. It is a highly contagious and usually fatal viral disease for animals, with members of the dog family being most susceptible, said provincial officials. Humans are not at risk of contracting it.
The infected raccoons were picked up by Manitoba Conservation after
they were reported by members of the public.
