At least six children have died and seven others hospitalised over the past fortnight at a village in Odisha's Malkangiri district, a senior official said on Sunday.
The exact cause of the deaths is yet to be known, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Ajay Kumar Baitha said.
The children, aged between the age of six months and four years, died at Tamanpalli village under Kalimela block in the past two weeks, he said.

Malkangiri: Panic has gripped residents of MV-79 Tamanapalli village in Malkangiri district as six infants have lost their lives in just 15 days due to an unknown disease. Though the exact reason behind the deaths is yet to be ascertained, a team of doctors from Kalimela hospital has reportedly reached the village to conduct examination.
“All the infants had complained of fever, cold, cough and vomiting. So far six have died in the village. We are in panic as my child is also suffering from fever. Suresh Madi, a local resident.
Reportedly, similar symptoms were seen in seven other infants while being examined.

Malkangiri district chief medical officer Dr Ajay Baitharu said the children hailed from Tamanpalli village under Maoist-affected Kalimela block of Malkangiri district and had died between October 13 and November 8.
“All the children were acutely malnourished and suffered from low birth weight. They had fever and were also suffering from cold. The families did not take proper precaution in bringing them up. In some cases, the infants were left sleeping in the open verandah. Even though the diseases are yet to be identified, we suspect the deaths could be linked to malnutrition. Our doctors have taken blood samples from the children,” said Baitharu.
