Diarrhoea claims one, 54 affected

A person of Talpali village under Puintala block died of diarrhoea on Saturday morning while 54 others have been affected by the disease. The condition of 11 affected persons is stated to be critical.

The critical villagers including a two-year-old were shifted to the district headquarters hospital on Friday evening while others are being treated by a team of doctors that rushed to the village immediately after getting the information.

The deceased has been identified as Khira Pradhan (82)

Diarrhoea has assumed an epidemic form in Kantajharigarh, Talagarh, Uppergarh and Jhumpan villages under Korei block of the district where one person has died while 65 others have been affected by the disease.

Sources said the water borne disease continues to spread among the villagers as no immediate precautionary measures have been take n by the Health Department.

?Around 65 persons suffering from the disease are undergoing treatment at hospitals. One Fusina Jena (40) of Talagada village died on Saturday night,? said Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Prasanna Mohanty.

Odisha on Saturday confirmed five cholera cases in Rayagada district.

At least 21 people of four villages under Padmapur block of the district, about 450 km from here, suffered from diarrhoea last week, and five of them have been tested positive for cholera, chief medical officer P.K. Das told IANS.

?We suspect water contamination as the main reason behind the disease,? he said.

3 'diarrhoea' deaths in Kandhamal

BERHAMPUR: At least three persons, including a two-year-old, have allegedly died of diarrhoea at Dagamaha and Taparangia villages under Kandhamal's Daringibadi block in the last one week. Several others are reportedly suffering from the water-borne disease in these villages.

While two persons of a family died at Taparangia village, a two-year-old was the victim at Dagamaha village. Official sources, however, denied diarrhoea as the cause of the deaths.

The blood and stool samples of 126 people of both villages tested negative for diarrhoea, Jena said. "They were found suffering from viral fever and malaria," he said, adding, "Doctors are camping in these villages."

Sources said there is not a single tubewell in the villages under tribal-dominated Budaguda gram panchayat and around 700 villagers depend on water bodies for their daily needs.

Diarrhoea has claimed one life in Nilagiri and affected several others in flood-affected areas of the district. Fifty persons have been affected by the disease in Nilagiri alone.

A woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, died on Saturday morning. The worst hit blocks are Bhogarai, Baliapal, Basta, Sadar and Remuna, besides some parts of Nilagiri.

He said consumption of contaminated water and unhygienic food are believed to be the main reasons behind spread of the disease. Patients have been admitted to nearby hospitals.

At least five persons have succumbed to diarrhoea in Mohona block of Gajapati district in the last two days with scores of villagers suffering from the water-borne disease.
The situation has been aggravated by the administration?s failure to take prompt action to contain the situation and fear abound that the disease may spread out to newer places affecting more villagers.
Poor health care services is a major problem in Mohona block which is the biggest tribal block in the state with a population of more than a lakh.

Water borne diseases in flooded areas

In the wake of water logging across the district, reports of outbreak of water borne diseases have started to come in.

According to sources at district health office, around 20 dysentery patients were admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital and city hospital on Friday. Besides, the number of jaundice patients has increased to 40 in last three days, they added.

70-yr-old dies of diarrhoea in Cuttack

CUTTACK: Outbreak of diarrhoea is reported from Cuttack. One person died and 35 were infected at Jagannath colony in Khapuria.

"Malati Jena, 70, of Jagannath colony was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital after she complained of loose motion and vomiting. She died on Sunday," said Santosh Bhol, a councillor.

Bhol alleged, "I requested CMC officials to disinfect tubewell points and wells as slum dwellers depend on them but nothing was done."

Epidemic hits flood-affected villages

Outbreak of epidemic is looming large following floods in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts. While two persons have died of diarrhoea in Morada, several others have been hospitalised.

The deceased, Muchiram Soren (53) and Raunde Murmu (70), belonged to flood-hit Kusumakuti village in Mayurbhanj district. Soren succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment in Morada hospital a couple of days back while Murmu died at her home on Monday. According to sources, more than 100 persons were affected by the water-borne disease and as many persons were down with fever in Basta, Baliapal, Bhogarai, Jaleswar, Remuna and Sadar blocks of Balasore district and Badasahi, Morada, Bisoi, Bangriposhi, Betnoti, Shyamakhunta, Kuliana, Rasgobindpur and seven other blocks of Mayurbhanj.

Many affected persons have been admitted to diffeent health centres, while health teams are treating patients in villages. A team of doctors on Tuesday rushed to Kusumakuti village.

1 dies of food poisoning in Cuttack

CUTTACK: One person died and 35 persons were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for suspected food poisoning after they consumed food at a community feast at Bidanasi here on Thursday.

Locals had consumed food at ekadasah ceremony (11th day of death) of one Alekh Lenka and complained of vomiting, headache and stomach pain. At least 25 persons were admitted to diarrhoea ward of SCB on Thursday night while 10 were admitted on Friday. The deceased was identified as Prasad Das, 40. He died while undergoing treatment at SCB.

SAMBALPUR: Death of an infant sparked tension in the district headquarters hospital here on Saturday night. Police registered a case basing on the complaint of the deceased's father that the baby died due to negligence in treatment.

Police said Sadashiv Kalet of the city brought his four-month-old son to the hospital for treatment on Saturday. The kid was suffering from diarrhoea. The doctor present in the paediatric ward prescribed medicines and asked Kalet to take back the child. Kalet requested the doctor to admit the child but in vain.

After diarrhoea led to the death of a six-year-old boy on November 9 in Brahmanachai village under Seragada block, 20 more persons were found to be affected by the disease. The village was marooned during the flood and consumption of contaminated water has led to outbreak of the disease, said District Health office sources. The disease spread further as the affected villagers went for treatment by quacks instead of availing medical care at the Government hospital.

Phulbani, 1 December: One person has died and nine others are suffering from diarrhoea in Dasingbadi, Kerubadi, Badangia, Kupibadi and Janekbadi villages under Daringbadi PHC during the last three days, according to information at Daringbadi PHC today.
Patra Nayak (18), a student of Daringbadi College, has been identified as the deceased. All the affected have been shifted to Balliguda sub-divisional hospital for better treatment.

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident on Monday, five members of a family here died and the conditions of three others of the family were serious due to suspected food poisoning.

The nine-member Padhi family is based in Pandara Sahi in Old Berhampur and owns a business of fast food, juice and fan coil winding. Eldest son Prasant and mother Sarojini survived as neither of them had food on Saturday night.

The victims of Pandara Street of the Old Brahmapur area under the Sadar police station suffered from food poisoning on Sunday and were admitted into the local MKCG Medical College Hospital. Three of them lost their lives on Monday morning.

Panic gripped several villages under Balikuda block in Jagatsinghpur district after diarrhoea broke out in the areas affecting a large number of people.
Sources said that most of those falling ill in the gastroenteritis disease belong to Osakana, Balbhadrapur and Baharana villages. At least 25 villagers as well as several children are said to have been affected.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports claimed that one Agani Dei (56) of Osakana village succumb to the disease at her home last night; officials, however, dismissed the allegation.

Collectors rubbishes reports of Diarrhoea Deaths in Nabarangpur

NABARANGPUR: Diarrhoea deaths had been reported from Chandahandi and Umerkote block of the district at least eight persons including two children died in diarrhoea while many others were affected and admitted to nearby hospitals.
In Chandahandi block alone, six persons, including two children, have died of diarrhea with in the last eight days. They have been identified as Syam Pangi (5) of Charaghati village, Eswar Goudo (30) of Semlapada, Suna Nag (55) and Parvati (15) of Belpati, Sesmal Pota (48) of Bhendia, and Kunti Nial (35) of Badamunda village. Hundreds were affected by the disease have been admitted at Chandahandi and
Deabandh CHCs.
Reacting to recent news of diarrhea cases reported in the district Collector Yamini Sarangi, said the news of 8 deaths published in newspapers lacked credibility. On Wednesday she clarified that only two had died of diarrhoea while attributing four other deaths to food poising and other diseases. Steps are being taken to clear garbage in the affected area she added.

A mother and her son died of diarrhoea and their other family members were affected by the water-borne disease at a village in Odisha's Balangir district, official sources said today.

More than 12 persons of Cheremera village under Jhankarpali gram panchayat have also been affected due to the water-borne disease and were under treatment at Bolangir district headuarters hospital, B K Kindo, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Bolangir, said.

The mother and son who died on Friday were identified as Mando Bhati (70) and her son Uma Shankar Bhati (40).

One dead in Khallikote diarrhoea outbreak

Khallikote, May 14:

More than 100 people, including 15 children, have been afflicted by diarrhoea in Bania village and its adjoining areas under Khallikote block in Odisha?s Ganjam district.

While seven-year old girl Sriyanka Das died of the disease today, eight-year old boy Hemant Das, who has also been afflicted with the disease, was shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur after his condition deteriorated, sources said.

While some people of the village suffered from diarrhoea immedaitely after attending a marriage feast in the same village, the disease soon spread to the entire village population as most of the villagers had attended the feast.

(Odisha), July 13: Three children of a family have died of suspected typhoid and several people affected with fever at a village in Odisha's Koraput district in less than a week, officials said on Sunday. A team of health officials, led by chief district medical officer (CDMO) of Koraput Laxmi Dhar Kabi, visited Tunpar in Laxmipur block village yesterday to take stock of the situation. Official sources said while 10-year-old son of Seema Saunta succumbed to the mystery disease on Monday, his seven-year-old daughter died on Tuesday and the disease claimed Saunta's 15-year-old daughter on Thursday.
