Ocean Ridge: Town seeking volunteers for disaster readiness plan
June 9, 2008

Ocean Ridge is taking part in a medical disaster readiness plan, which would allow the town to become distribution center in the event of a bio-terrorist attack.

In Palm Beach County, 35 communities, including municipalities and homeowners associations, are entering into the agreement with the Palm Beach County Health Department to be distribution centers, Terry Vinas, who is coordinating the centers, wrote in a memo to town residents.

The centers would be set up to dispense medications in the case of an avian flu or small pox outbreak.

The Health Department is recruiting 5,400 volunteers to be trained to run the centers. Ocean Ridge is looking for about 20 volunteers, at least one who is a licensed medical professional.

Those who want to volunteer need to fill out an application that includes two personal references. The Health Department will have a 90-minute training session in town, which will be scheduled once it recruits volunteers.

To request an application or for information about the program, call Town Hall at 561-732-2635.
