President Barack Obama delivers a speech during a reception and dinner at the Museo Nacional de Antropologia in Mexico City Thursday, April 16, 2009. A man Obama met at the anthropology museum later died with flu-like symptoms, raising concerns about the president's exposure to the swine flu epidemic in Mexico.

Scientists have long been concerned that a new flu virus could launch a pandemic, a worldwide spread of a killer disease. A new virus could evolve when different flu viruses infect a pig, a person or a bird, mingling their genetic material. The resulting hybrid could spread quickly because people would have no natural defenses against it.

FT doesn't do conspiracty theories.

The combination is "strange" only to people who are unfamiliar with influenza genetics.

The news coverage on the museum death said he died of pre-exising conditions.

From what they said on the news this morning, they are running tests now to see if his pnemonia might have been worsened or caused by the swine flu, it won't be confirmed for a few more days when the results come back. Isn't it possible that this Flu strain has been around for months and not diagnosed until recently?

in my first post, I admitted I know very little so it is all strange to me.

Please don't get upset if I ask questions or point out stories I have found, that is how it will become less strange for many of us...

I'm sure there are a few lurkers out there with the same questions that are a little too shy to join and ask...

For what it is worth, I am watching Press Secretary Gibbs's press conference on CNN now. He just got savaged by numerous media members on the Obama in Mexico during outbreak question. The press wanted to know if the admin knew about this at the time, if they Mexican government withheld information, if Obama had been exposed, and whether he had come into physical contact with Professor Solis who died shortly thereafter.

Gibbs keeps trying to change the subject, saying he will look into it, and repeating the presidents doctors assured him that Obama's health is fine and this is not an issue.

well he went right from Mexico to an international meeting of other leaders.

His system could have been immune, but does anyone know if it can travel with someone not showing signs? :(

all these unanswered question could get really messy...

Apparently no one in the Obama party showed any symptoms.

No one tested these non-sick people.

This conversation is over and out now.
