Toxic Christchurch earthquake rubble and asbestos from damaged buildings may be potential health hazards.

Canterbury District Health Board member Andrew Dickerson said many people who worked in the rubble of New York's World Trade Center developed chronic health problems. Some had died.

He told a board meeting that an area established by the Christchurch City Council at Bottle Lake Forest would deal with 4.25 million tonnes of rubble in coming months.

"I am thinking about exposure to things like asbestos, toxins from electronic waste, toxins in the dust and toxins from treated timber," he said.
