The need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on infection controls put in place during the H1N1 flu pandemic is being questioned by members of the Southern District Health Board.

Southland and Dunedin hospitals are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on things such as disposable drapes, protective clothing for hospital staff and laundry costs.

Board member Richard Thomson asked whether the money used on heightened infection control would be better used elsewhere, like replacing unreliable diagnostics equipment that meant patients were waiting longer in hospital.
