An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Auckland is believed to have claimed it's first life with the death of a woman this week.

Ten people have needed hospital treatment during a major outbreak of the disease which may have infected up to 300 city buildings.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service says the woman had underlying health problems and Legionnaires' was not the sole cause of her death.

They would not say when or where she died or give her age.

It's believed the woman died yesterday or today.

The disease is a form of pneumonia that can be life-threatening for people with weakened immune systems.

Four of the 10 who contracted the disease were admitted to North Shore Hospital. Two were discharged over the weekend, while the other two remain in serious but stable conditions.

Middlemore Hospital confirmed three patients with Legionnaires' had been hospitalised there over the past six weeks, but they had all been discharged. One person was treated at Auckland City Hospital. It is unclear where the remaining two cases were treated.

The Property Council alerted its members this afternoon, requesting building owners or managers with water-powered/water-cooled air conditioning systems to immediately chemically treat their systems in order to kill any Legionella bacteria which may be present.

It takes between two and 14 days for legionnaires to get a grip, which makes it difficult to pinpoint a source and say how widespread the outbreak could go, Dr Baker says.

?The cases are dispersed so widely over the city and you have only got to take one breath of contaminated air to get infected.

"It is almost impossible for people to remember where they went everyday and remember where they took breath.

?Because of the incubation period we won?t know for two weeks if our message for people to shock dose their systems has worked.

I would expect we would see more cases because it will be at least two weeks before we know if its made any difference,? Dr Baker says.

Boss Hunia has been decontaminating the cooling towers of 200 buildings around Auckland in an effort to stamp out the outbreak.

?Sodium hydrochloride is fast-acting and hard-hitting, so it?s probably the most effective chemical we use when we get a high count of bacteria or legionella,? he says.

Today, he's treating the central city library. If there is legionella in the water of the cooling towers it will be instantly killed.

He's acting on orders from Auckland Regional Public Health, who is trying to pinpoint where and how the outbreak started.

?Looking at the map, there are potentially more cases in the South and the West,? says a public health doctor. ?But I really think at the moment we need to say this is quite a widespread outbreak.?

On average, around two or three people are diagnosed with Legionnaires? disease over a six-week period in Auckland.

But over the past six weeks, 12 people have been diagnosed. Most of them have now been hospitalised, and an elderly woman has died...

No further cases in Auckland after legionnaires outbreak

Public health officials in Auckland say there have been no further reported cases of Legionnaires disease after an outbreak involving 12 cases, one of them fatal.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says no new cases have been reported since Good Friday...

The number of people affected in a major outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Auckland has risen to 12, despite the council urging thousands to shock-dose their air conditioning systems and water cooling towers.

Since the outbreak nine weeks ago, one person has died and over the weekend the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) was notified of one new case...

A five month Legionnaires' disease outbreak which killed two people in Auckland has been declared over by health authorities.

The outbreak, which began in February, resulted in 17 confirmed cases of the disease, including the two deaths.

It may also result in legislative changes which could make it mandatory for building owners to log their cooling towers on a register, and to require owners to test for the presence of Legionella bacteria every month...
