Govt steps up swine flu precautions in light of Australia?s outbreak

More than 25,000 cases of swine flu have been reported in 73 countries
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 5:30p.m.

Students from Gisborne Boys' High School are the latest travellers to be quarantined with suspected swine flu.

The group of 16 students, two parents and a teacher came back from Brisbane on Sunday and five of the pupils are now showing symptoms.

The Government is initiating new quarantine guidelines in light of the recent cases of swine flu.

The new measures that are already in place have proved enough to surprise visitors to New Zealand.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says authorities are being posted in airports to monitor people entering New Zealand from affected countries.

?What we're focusing on is that every passenger coming into New Zealand from affected countries is being screened by a public health professional,? he says.

Swine flu swept the country in April and May and then outbreaks began to drop.

The infection rate is once again rising, particularly over the Tasman.

Ryall says Australia has recently been hit hard by the virus.

?There's been a massive increase in the number of swine flu cases in Australia, 1200 today and over 1000 in Victoria, with most concentrated in North Melbourne,? says Ryall.

The Government has dramatically stepped up safety measures, enlisting police to force people into quarantine if they contract the virus or have been in close contact with someone showing symptoms.

Health authorities can also forcibly exclude children and teachers with the virus from schools.

Suzi de Gouveia, Principal of St Teresa?s School, says the Health Ministry are targeting children who have travelled in affected countries.

?The ministry have recommended that any children who have travelled to countries that are affected stay away for 7 days on their return to New Zealand - even if they don't have symptoms,? she says.

More than 25,000 cases of swine flu have been reported in 73 countries.

The virus has proved fatal in 150 of the 25,000 cases, but the virus is still capable of crippling a country's health system.

Virologist Lance Jennings says there is a public perception that because fatalities are low, the virus is not dramatically effecting countries.

?There is a perception that it's causing relatively mild disease but of course it's spreading rapidly,? says Dr Jennings.

?It is paralysing Australia's health system at the present time.?

The virus is recently shown to be affecting healthy adults more than anyone, prompting New Zealand authorities to be weary of visiting Australian skiers this winter.

Health officials have begun entering workplaces and treating colleagues of swine flu patients.

Twenty nine Wellington staff who have been in close contact with one case have today been given Tamiflu and are now in home isolation for 72 hours.

The total number of confirmed cases nationwide has now hit 19, up from 17 yesterday. Those cases are spread around Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hawke's Bay.

Health officials took action in workplaces after three Wellington cases were confirmed as having Influenza A (H1N1) "swine flu" in the past two days.

The first case, notified yesterday, was a passenger off Air NZ flight NZ124 which arrived from Melbourne on 5 June 2009. The case is in isolation at home and is being treated with Tamiflu.

Two further confirmed cases were reported by Wellington's Regional Public Health overnight. Both cases arrived on May 31 from Los Angeles on flight NZ5. The pair became unwell after travelling together and swabs were taken on Sunday - nearly a week after arriving home.

"As symptoms did not appear until 4-5 days after arrival the pair are unlikely to have been infectious onboard NZ5 and passengers are not being traced," the ministry said.

But family and workplace colleagues are being traced. In one case 11 of the infected person's colleagues have been medically assessed with one colleague, who has symptoms, now being treated as a suspect swine flu case and swabbed.

All of the staff in the workplace have been sent home with Tamiflu and given information on signs and symptoms of influenza and what to do if they become unwell, the Health Ministry said

In the other case, the staff member works in an open plan office where staff work in "pods" of four desks. "Staff working in the five pods closest to the case, along with some other staff are being assessed by public health staff this afternoon," a Health Ministry statement said.

All have been offered Tamiflu and asked to stay in isolation at home, and anyone with symptoms has been swabbed.

Meanwhile Stuff.co.nz journalist Guy MacGibbon has also been placed in quarantine today after visiting a doctor's surgery last Thursday.

He was contacted by the Health Ministry this afternoon out of concern he could potentially have contracted swine flu from another patient in the waiting room who has tested positive. None of his colleagues have been placed in isolation.

"One thing I got a clear response on was not to panic everyone who has been in contact with me in the five-odd days since my potential swine flu contact," MacGibbon writes in his blog.

PUPILS ISOLATED

Sixteen Gisborne Boy's High School pupils who recently returned from a trip to Brisbane have also been isolated in a classroom with suspected swine flu.

Nineteen people were on the trip: 16 pupils, two teachers and one parent. The group notified health authorities this morning after five of them exhibited flu-like symptons.

They will be visited by Public Health staff later this morning for swabs to be taken and the ones that have viral symptoms will be prescribed a course of Tamiflu.

It is hoped the test results will be available tomorrow.

They are considered as suspected cases as Australia is deemed by the Health Ministry as an "affected area".

Medical Officer of Health Dr Geoff Cramp said the school had taken the right steps by isolating the party from the rest of the school.

"They moved quickly to ensure any possible spread would be minimal," he said.

"While we wait for the results of the swabs from Christchurch the party will be asked to remain in isolation so that the virus is not transferred to the wider community."

One student and a parent had remained at home and the rest were in isolation in a classroom.

The school party brings the number of suspected cases in the Tairawhiti district to six.

swine fluMy Tamiflu pack has come in. It was delivered by Roland, who I spoke to by phone. I peeked out the curtain and saw his outline in the dim porchlight outside the window as he called me up.

He asked that I give him 10 seconds to scoot down the path out of the danger zone. "I'll be waiting down by the garage," he said. A few seconds later he hollered: "You can come out now."

"Don't look at me, I'm hideous!" I wailed. No, I made that bit up. I really said: "Cheers Roland."

So now I have to take my pills, wash my hands thoroughly and frequently, and read the accompanying literature. When I've read up I'll give you some real information.

Still asymptomatic by the way.

I'm signing off for tonight, but there's heaps more to tell tomorrow, and I have a bit of fun planned.

Anyone else out there in isolation? Any ideas for how to pass the time? Here's the place to share your experiences.
