School takes swine flu precaution

In Christchurch, Cobham Intermediate School is advising parents that students who travel overseas stay home for at least a week before returning to school.

Principal Trevor Beaton says the advise, sent to parents in a newsletter, is simply a suggestion as the school does not have the power to insist on the measures.

He says the advice may change as the situation changes and more is known about the spread of the virus.

students returning from overseas travel from this point (and until further notice) must adhere to one of the following two options

1. Remain at home for seven days before returning to school. This is the incubation period for Influenza A H1N1 in children, during which they may shed the virus even if they do not have the symptoms, or

2. Complete a course of Tamiflu prior to returning to New Zealand, and return straight to school.

For flu? type illnesses generally, please keep your child at home until all symptoms have gone.

Hand sanitisers are recommended for personal use and students are encouraged to have these at school with them.

Staff travelling overseas are required to have completed a course of Tamiflu before they return.

The impact of this decision on:

a. international students travelling home in the holidays

b. our students who are currently on exchange overseas, and

c. sports trips heading to Australia in the July break will be managed by the staff member responsible.

...students and staff who have been travelling overseas may return to school immediately and without completing a course of Tamiflu if they do not feel unwell.
However, should your child become unwell, i.e. fever, sore throat, aches etc, whether he/she has travelled or not, please keep them at home until all symptoms have gone (7 days).
