NZ - Christchurch Art Gallery will remain closed for the rest of the year

The Christchurch Art Gallery will remain closed for the rest of the year so it can be used by earthquake officials.

However, staff say they will "try to bring a little of the gallery" to the public.

Acting director Blair Jackson published a statement on the gallery's website today, saying the facility was expected to remain closed until next year because it was still being used by earthquake authorities.

"Where previously we had art on our walls, now we have ideas, plans, buzz words and concepts. In many ways it's extremely appropriate that the gallery maintains its position as a creative hub for the city - there is a real sense of purpose and creation coming from the occupied galleries, and it's quite exciting."

Jackson said the building was structurally sound, but some remediation work needed to be completed inside the building and a damaged apartment building nearby could not be demolished until earthquake authorities moved out of the gallery.
