Asthma exacerbates swine flu symptoms

Nineteen-year-old Zachary Wilson recently died of swine flu, but it's now thought the seriousness of his condition was exacerbated by the asthma he suffered.

Asthma in combination with flu causes a two-pronged assault on our airways.

Asthma tightens them and the flu fills them with mucus. The end result is far more trouble breathing than if they would only have if they had asthma or flu on their own.

With New Zealand's high rates of asthma, this is particularly serious.

One-in four-children suffer from it, along with one-in-six adults. All up, that's around 750,000 New Zealanders.

We've all been told about reducing the risks of flu, but what about asthma?

Debra Leutenegger, a nurse and educator at the Auckland Asthma Society, spoke to Campbell Live about combating asthma.

I've only been here a wee while - you cant have cloned me already... did you?

Asthma with flu is a very important issue. The video is a great explanation of the asthma/flu interaction. The post has been copied, another title and a note added.

Ok - I found the PM department (still finding my way around).

I'm not so sure I like the idea of someone else posting under my name - but I do understand the reasioning.

Nar - a new thread was created by DazzaMc which I didn't start, Sally kind of cloned a post and used it to create this new thread. I understand the reasoning but next time just PM me (now that I've found the PM's) and I'll reshuffle.
