Principals warned over measles

The Ministry of Health has written to school principals advising them to ensure all pupils, parents and staff are immunised against measles as an outbreak threatens to sweep the country.

One senior medical officer is also warning New Zealanders aged between 17 and 23 are at risk because of a change in vaccinations 13 years ago.

The letter has gone to every school and preschool in the country in a bid to stem the contagious disease.

There have been 79 confirmed cases of measles since December - 59 in Auckland, 15 in Bay of Plenty, three in Wellington and two in Hawke's Bay. More than half of Auckland's cases are senior pupils at Westlake Boys High School...

People are being urged to ensure their children are up to date with their immunisations.

Since the start of the year there have been about 120 cases of measles in New Zealand with the majority of these being in Auckland.

Toi Te Ora medical officer of Health Dr Phil Shoemack said there was concern measles could spread to the Bay of Plenty and Lakes during the school holidays...

A confirmed measles case attended the Armageddon Expo at Claudelands Event Centre on Sunday 25 May.

The case was well but would have been infectious at the time of the event, said Waikato District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Anita Bell.

"Those who attended the event on Sunday need to be mindful of the signs and symptoms of measles within the next few weeks," she said...

The measles outbreak in Hamilton has highlighted the district's vulnerability to preventable disease.

A new quarterly target report from the Ministry of Health has revealed Waikato has the lowest immunisation rate in New Zealand.

The report shows Waikato District Health Board recorded that 84 per cent of babies under the age of eight months had received immunisations...

...The outbreak in Hamilton, which started at Fraser High School, has now been confirmed at two other prominent schools in the city's west, taking confirmed cases to 49 with 16 under investigation.

On Friday a confirmed case at Hamilton Junior High School forced the school to withdraw from the 2014 Stage Challenge...

...The Ministry of Health said between December 2013 and June 13, 2014, 190 measles cases have been reported in New Zealand - 113 in Auckland, 56 in Waikato, 15 in Bay of Plenty/Lakes, four in Wellington, and two in Hawke's Bay...

Measles cases in Hamilton rise to 60

Five people in Hamilton have been hospitalised with measles as the number of confirmed cases in the city has risen to 60.

The disease has continued to spread in Hamilton and while still largely associated with Fraser High School, there was also a confirmed case at both Hamilton Girls' High School and Hamilton Junior High School.

Waikato District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Anita Bell said it was investigating around another 14 suspected cases throughout the city...

People in the South Island who haven't been immunised for measles are being warned an outbreak in the North Island is set to move south.

Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Ed Kiddle said measles cases are increasing in the North Island, with 77 cases recently confirmed in Hamilton, affecting five schools.

In total, there have been 210 confirmed cases in the North Island since December 2013 with at least 34 hospitalisations...

A North Taranaki child is suspected of having measles and two people have been quarantined as a precautionary measure.

Contacts of the suspected case are being followed up and if they are not immune, are being quarantined, Taranaki District Health Board Medical Officer of Health, Dr Greg Simmons said.

The process of identifying contacts only started yesterday, so more people may be quarantined as the investigation continues...

A Measles outbreak is continuing in Waikato with 84 cases now confirmed across five schools.

The spread initially started at Fraser High School but Hamilton Boys' High School, Frankton Primary School, Nga Taiatea Wharekura and Raglan Area School have now also been contaminated by the virus.

Of the 84 cases, only four have been immunised...

Cases of measles have recently been reported in New Zealand.

There are measles outbreaks in several countries overseas including the Philippines, Australia, Europe, UK, Africa, Asia, India and North America. Since December 2013 there have also been cases of measles reported in New Zealand. Most of the cases in New Zealand have been linked to international travel.

Case numbers

Between December 2013 and 27 June 2014, there have been 221 measles cases reported in New Zealand. 113 are in Auckland, 85 in Waikato, 15 in Bay of Plenty/Lakes, 4 in Wellington, 3 in Hawke?s Bay and 1 in Taranaki.

It can take 10?14 days for someone who has caught measles to start showing any symptoms. Anyone who feels unwell should phone their GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice. It is vitally important to call first before seeing a doctor because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others in the waiting room.

Measles warning after confirmed case in Bay

The Bay of Plenty has had its first confirmed case of measles in more than six months.

An expat New Zealander visited the Western Bay of Plenty two weeks ago but after leaving the country discovered she had the virus.

The confirmed case was the first in the Bay of Plenty since December 23 last year.

It joined a raft of confirmed measles cases sweeping the North Island with Waikato District Health Board confirming the most, with 96 cases.

Bay of Plenty medical officer of health Phil Shoemack said the woman may have been infectious during her last 24 hours in the Bay...

Health authorites say a measles outbreak in the upper North Island seems to be slowing, but people planning to travel in the school holidays should take care.


There have been 200 reported cases of the disease in Auckland and Waikato since last December.

And there are now 95 confirmed cases of measles in the Waikato region - 11 more than a week ago.

All but four are people who were not fully immunised...

Hamilton's measles outbreak has been linked with the same strain that plagued Auckland earlier this year.

Waikato Population Health Service confirmed the strains were both connected but could not confirm how it spread to Hamilton.

Medical officer of health Dr Anita Bell said 95 cases had been confirmed in the Waikato since the outbreak began in June.

The outbreak began among students at Fraser High School in Hamilton and spread to four other schools, including one in Raglan.

Bell said the source could have been contact with an Auckland case or importation by foreign travel...

Waikato District Health Board?s Population Health service has to date (8 July 2014) been notified of 101 confirmed measles cases, of these 53 are laboratory confirmed, the rest are close contacts of a confirmed case with a clinically compatible illness.

Over one quarter of the confirmed cases are household contacts of a confirmed case and were already placed in quarantine before they were unwell.

Approximately 80 per cent of cases are aged between 10-20 years of age. The other 20 per cent are aged under 10 years and are close contacts of confirmed cases in quarantine as they were not vaccinated.

Nine cases have been hospitalised but are now well...
