Updated: 19:30, Wednesday January 1, 2014

An outbreak of measles linked to a Sydney hip-hop dance festival has spread from Auckland to the New Zealand cities of Turangi and Taupo, with 10 cases confirmed.

An 18-year-old Auckland woman was the first to have been reported contracting measles while in Sydney early in December, after she took part in the 2013 World Supremacy Battlegrounds hip-hop competition.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health on Wednesday said that on top of the Auckland case, there were nine confirmed cases and one case under investigation around Turangi and Taupo...

One further measles case has been confirmed, and more are expected, as health officials continue to monitor families exposed to the disease.

The latest case, in the Taupo and Turangi area, brings the total to 11, all of whom attended or had had contact with someone who was at the World Supremacy Battleground hip-hop event in Sydney in December.

The outbreak is contained to Auckland, Taupo and Turangi so far, but families in Huntly, Hamilton and Wellington are also being monitored.

Three cases have also been confirmed by health authorities in New South Wales.

Bay of Plenty and Lakes District medical officer of health Neil de Wet said public health nurses had been in touch with more than 50 people over the past 48 hours to check on their risk of catching the infectious disease...

Measles outbreak linked to Sydney dance festival
January 3, 2014 - 10:23PM

A measles outbreak that began at a hip-hop dance festival in Sydney has spread across the country and overseas, leaving at least 14 people infected and tens of thousands of people exposed to the disease.

The outbreak began when a Filipino man with flu-like symptoms competed in the festival, attended by more than 2000 people in early December.

A 10-year-old girl in Adelaide was next to fall ill. She too had been at the festival.

Then a woman in Auckland was diagnosed. And a person in Sydney. And nine more people in Turangi and Taupo in New Zealand - six of whom had not gone to the competition, but knew someone who had.

Most recently, a 21-year-old man from Melbourne fell ill, but his symptoms only emerged after he had spent Boxing Day amid the throngs of people taking advantage of Christmas sales at the city's busiest shopping centre. He too had attended the festival...

Two people, including a baby, had measles symptoms so severe they were admitted to hospital at the weekend, health authorities say.

The new cases bring the number of confirmed measles cases connected to a hip-hop event in December to 16 - one in Auckland, two in Wellington, and 13 in the Taupo-Turangi area.

In Taupo-Turangi, a 15-month-old baby was admitted to hospital on Friday, but has since been discharged, and an adult was also admitted and is still undergoing care.

Medical officer of health Phil Shoemack said both were admitted because of the severity of their symptoms.

Fears measles spreading in city
By Martin Johnston
5:30 AM Monday Feb 17, 2014
Two new cases including Auckland Grammar boy spark warning to be watchful.

Auckland's public health authority fears a highly infectious measles virus may be starting to spread in the city independently of imported cases of the disease.

Until now, cases in the city's dose of measles - a potentially serious illness - have been traced to imported illness from hotspots such as the Philippines.

But two cases have been diagnosed in which inquiries by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service had not, by the end of last week, turned up any connection to the imported lines of the virus...
