Northland DHB Medical Officer of Health Jonathan Jarman is urging parents to check their children are up to date and 'on-time' with their immunizations, with an increase in cases of Whooping cough in the region

Since the start of the year there have been 47 reported cases of whooping cough. The youngest case was 22 days old and the oldest was aged 71 years old. In the past week the number of reported cases has risen by a further six cases, three of these being young children.

In 2011 there were only 10 cases for the whole year...

The pertussis outbreak that was first detected on the West Coast in May last year is now being experienced in other areas of the country, including in Canterbury, Nelson-Marlborough and parts of the North Island.

The number of new cases on the West Coast has decreased from the peak last year but is still higher than normal levels.

Between 1 May 2011 and 22 June 2012 there have been 497 notifications of suspected pertussis received by Community & Public Health's West Coast Office. To date, 328 people have been confirmed as having the disease. The difference between the number of notifications and the numbers of confirmed cases indicates that general practices are being vigilant when patients present with a cough of more than two week's duration. Children under the age of ten years continue to have the highest rates of the disease...

The whooping cough outbreak in Auckland shows no signs of slowing down in the cold winter months with 89 new cases reported in the past month, making it the most significant outbreak in the city since 2004.

As of Monday there were 411 confirmed or probable cases of the infection, according to the Auckland Regional Public Health Service - up from 322 a month earlier.

Most years the regional public health service records an average of less than 40 confirmed or probable cases of the infection in Auckland...

Bay of Plenty parents are being asked to ensure their babies are immunised on time as a whooping cough outbreak continues throughout the country.

An outbreak of whooping cough started in the South Island last year and has spread across New Zealand during 2012.

Toi Te Ora Public Health Service has been notified of 243 people with whooping cough in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts since the start of this year, with 14 people requiring hospitalisation...

Big increase in cases of whooping cough

There was a large increase in cases of whooping cough nationwide in 2012.

In its latest report on whooping cough, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research said on Tuesday that notifications increased by 197% last year compared with 2011.

ESR said there were 5938 notifications of whooping cough (pertussis) in 2012, an increase of 197% on the 1996 cases the previous year.

From early December to early January there were 520 new cases notified, 254 of which were confirmed.

ESR said notifications remain above levels in the past two years and have been increasing consistently since August 2011.

The worst regions in the most recent period are Canterbury, Waikato, Hutt Valley and Wellington. ESR said 309 patients were admitted to hospitals and there were two deaths, a child and a baby...

A whooping cough epidemic has eased off in Taranaki, but prevention is the key to keeping it under control, Taranaki medical officer of health Jonathan Jarman says.

The New Zealand-wide epidemic has been causing concern for more than a year.

In Taranaki, there was a peak in cases in November, when 25 were confirmed, through to January, when there were 24 cases, Dr Jarman said.

In the past two months, recorded cases had dropped to six and five respectively.

But these would be just the tip of the iceberg of the people who had contracted the disease, Dr Jarman said...

Wanganui parents are being urged to immunise their children against whooping cough as a national outbreak sweeps the country.

Last year 149 cases of the disease - also known as pertussis - were reported in Wanganui. Another 21 cases had been reported by February this year, Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) figures show.

Whanganui District Health Board's medical officer, Patrick O'Connor, said whooping cough cases had been increasing from June, dropping off only in the past two months...

During the past 20 months more than 1200 people across the region have contracted whooping cough (pertussis), with Nelson city being the most affected area. Adults are battling whooping cough in the Bay of Plenty, making up half the number of patients suffering from the disease, according to the Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health.

Dr Phil Shoemack says there is a nationwide whooping cough outbreak and adults are responsible for a lot of the spread of infection...

Whooping cough outbreak in Northland
More cases of whooping cough have been reported in Northland in the first five months of 2013 than in the entire year in 2012.

Northland is in the grips of a whopping cough outbreak, with more cases of the potentially deadly infection reported in five months than overall last year.

Babies are bearing the brunt of the contagious respiratory condition, with three in every four infected Northland infant under one ending up in hospital.

Public Health has been notified of 93 cases in the area in the five months from January to June - more than the total reported in 2012.

Northland DHB says for every reported case of whopping cough there could be 80 to 100 other cases, meaning the area may have been hit by up to 9000 cases of the infection since the beginning of the year...

A prolonged whooping cough outbreak across the top of the south is expected to drop off at the end of the year despite reported cases in July already exceeding last month's total.

The region had 60 new cases reported by yesterday compared to 50 cases for all of June.

However, Nelson Marlborough medical officer of health Jill Sherwood said outbreaks normally lasted only two years.

The existing outbreak was officially declared in August 2011...
