The latest data on the national outbreak of whooping cough was released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday. The data for 2012 is through week 19, ending May 12. New York State continues to report the third highest number of pertussis cases in the United States, with 42 new cases in the last week and a total of 925 cases for the year.
In the week 19 MMWR report released by the CDC yesterday, New York ranks third nationally in reported cases of whooping cough. New York City has reported 159 pertussis cases this year and New York outside the City has reported 766. The state health department reported 42 new pertussis cases in the last week. The last six weeks have averaged 55 new cases per week...

Niagara Gazette ? Cases of Whooping Cough are up so far this year, according to Niagara County health officials.
The Niagara County Department of Health on Friday issued a notice informing residents that several cases of Whooping Cough, formally known as Pertussis, have recently been identified.
County health department officials said 15 cases have been medically diagnosed based on laboratory tests, signs and symptoms since January.

After several weeks with little growth in the number of whooping cough cases reported, New York saw an additional 87 cases reported for the week ending June 9, 2012. New York City's total remained unchanged at 173 reported pertussis cases while the rest of the state jumped from 883 to 970 cases. The current six week average increase in cases is now 50.
Peter Constantakes, a spokesman for the New York State Department of Health, states that the 970 whooping cough cases through June 8 compare to just 247 in 2011 for the same period. Three infants died from pertussis in New York in 2011. There have been no deaths reported thus far in 2012...
