Whooping Cough Cases Rising In Monroe County

Rochester, N.Y. - The Monroe County Department of Health reports a high level of whooping cough cases the past six months.

In a normal year, the county only has 5-10 cases, according to John Ricci of the Monroe County Health Department. In the past six months, 60 cases of whooping cough, or pertussis have been reported...

...The New York State Department of Health says pertussis activity continues to increase in the state, claiming the lives of two infants in New York State in 2011.

A 19-day-old infant died earlier this year, after developing congestion, cough, sneezing and difficulty breathing at nine days old. At 12 days old, the infant was diagnosed with bronchiolitis and was sent to the emergency department. The infant's condition worsened and at 15 days old the baby was intubated.

A seven-week-old infant died from pertussis, after persistent coughing for three weeks, being diagnosed with bronchiolitis and being admitted to the pediatric ICU....

Miller Place elementary student diagnosed with whooping cough

A Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School student has been diagnosed with a case of pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, according to an emergency notification sent out by the district Wednesday.

The Miller Place elementary school student began showing symptoms of the highly contagious disease in early May, according to a letter from the Suffolk County Health Department dated June 7...

According to health services, with the confirmed pertussis cases, 40 in total throughout Suffolk County, information on the bacterial respiratory illness has been given to camp directors to be disbursed to parents and camp staff...

The number of pertussis -- or whooping cough -- cases recorded in Suffolk County so far this year has more than tripled compared with last year, leading public health authorities to issue an alert for doctors to be on the lookout for the condition...

...The county has reported 179 pertussis cases to the New York State Department of Health so far this year, compared with 54 cases in 2010 and 75 cases in 2009. Nationwide, 27,550 cases of pertussis were reported in 2010, up from 16,858 cases in 2009...

Another Whooping Cough Case in Northport

Health officials warned parents of students in Northport-East Northport schools that another child has come down with pertussis, a highly contagious disease also known as whooping cough.

In a letter dated Monday, health officials said a student with a case of whooping cough attended Fifth Avenue Elementary School in East Northport. The letter also warned that children and adults may still come down with the disease even if they are up to date with vaccinations.

A spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Department of Health said there have been 205 cases of whooping cough since the outbreak started in June. In total, there have been 216 cases of the contagious disease reported this year.
